I got tickets to see Neil for the first time!!!!!!!!!!!

Im 23, and been a huge fan since I was 17. I missed the crazy horse tour in 2003 because I was moving and it literally went around me, and none of the shows over the last few years came anywhere close (I live in tampa). I saw the CSNY tour in 06 in Ft. Lauderdale, but we all know that isnt the same!

I am in section SRA row O in the back, but I couldn't be happier. Im so glad that I am going to get to see him play a colo acoustic show! I hope I get to hear ambulance blues...

I had pretty good luck in getting a pair in row EE dead center at the Fox. The Ryman was not available almost immediately, KY & SC seemed easy enough. Now I just need to figure out how to get to ATL. Delta from JFK is $288 roundtriop today!stien

In 1999, on Neil's last solo tour, I waited for what must of been months for Neil to announce a Toronto date.
And I watched the whole tour pass me by,

Well I won't make the same mistake this time.
I'm going to Nashville baby! Row H on the floor, sec 7.

Still hoping for a TO date.

My attitude about concerts- especially Neil Young shows is that I'm happy to just be there- as long as the sound is good and people aren't too rude and I've got a little weed for my head. Just to hear the live music- that's what I'm there for. Of course its always better to be close but what the hell, sometimes its impossible so just enjoy. Neil is sitting and playing when solo acoustic. I have a feeling that with these shows-whether first row or last row (and I've been in both) its gonna be great. Neil ALWAYS is.

we're goin to the ryman folks, my wife, me and my brother. You know, I really hope that Neil has been struck by the muse and has written a whole host of new songs, that's what it feels like to me when he throws a few shows out there right away, he wants to get the material in front of the audience. Whatever he brings I can accept it and will do my best to enjoy it and enjoy it from his angle. now, everyone, please keep your behavior at its best, and most polite during the songs so the tapers can capture something most special! Some of my most treasured boots are from the 99 solo tour, exquisite acoutics and clear recordings, quiet crowds = neil bliss for years to come.

and a note to tuned 4 life, CONGRATS, you deserve the best seats in the house! What is this about your 35th show within arm's reach of Neil? We're going to Ryman 6/2 show. and the cornwalls are sounding so sweet! here's the best to you Doug...

This is all very silly. Neil announces a solo tour, I read all the wheat there is on this site, I fall into a dream last night and presto, Neil Young is playing a solo gig which at first I think I'm watching on Saturday Night Live, and subsequently I'm in the theatre in the second row and Neils singing, playing and shaking my hand. Quite weird, but it's the 3rd or 4th episode of dreams like that in the last 5 years. I believe I'll have my head examined

As Crosby sings, "In my dreams I can see a love that could be"

Now back to our normal programming

From the New Yorker:

N.Y.: Yeah, but generally we hate the fucking audience. They disturb the whole thing. (On the laptop screen, Young waves his arms back and forth in the air, in the manner of an enthusiastic concertgoer.) They’ve got people who do that. They have people who wave their hands back and forth in the background. That’s what they do. It doesn’t matter what the music is. It’s a way to make a living, I guess. (Demme looks up at the clock and exchanges a glance with an assistant.) I remember we did a tour, and they had these cranes out in the audience, flying around, casting cones of light down on the audience, so that everyone in the audience had these halos on their heads. I walked out onstage and said to myself, “This is fucked up. I might not even play. This is so wrong.” All night long I was thinking, Why do I have to see people? I’ve never seen them before. I hate looking at them.

In the context of making a concert film, I can see the audience being an irritation. But these statements are broader than that. Neil, if you're out there, seeing these kinds of quotes from you doesn't make me want to buy your next record, or come to your next show. They make me want to kick your teeth down your fucking throat! I have spent approx. $1050 on you in the past three years, if that gives you an idea of how much I enjoy your music. I also enjoyed hearing what you had to say. But this is fucking ridiculous. I'm not missing the point here, I understand that you create the music, from your experience and it's about you alone. But if you hate the audience so much, than stop fucking performing. Fuck off, and spare us your little rants cursing the people who built your fucking train barn! Everyone's always saying, Neil Young's so respectable. Other artists, the media. He's a living legend. Well let me tell ya these quotes make you look great. A real fucking hero.

I'm 100% sure the comments from the NewYorker are real and Neil's right! He's not there for me or for you, he's there to make his music. Anything that disturbs that should not be there.
I've seen the Smell The Horse tour in Rotterdam where Neil played a smoking version of Cortez, he almost reinvented the song there on stage. That song alone lasted more than 20 minutes, the whole show was between 2-3 hours and most of the time Neil was with his back to the audience in a small circle in front of the bass drum with Frank and Billy.
I don't come to concerts to be recognized by him, or spoken to, or to be greeted like so many artists do with something like 'hello Holland' or whatever. That sort of thing makes me puke. If you don't know one town in my country from another, how dare you say 'hello Holland' or whatever country. Shut the f#ck up and play.
So that's what Neil does. I'm happy with that.
I can completely understand this and I swear it is THIS attitude that makes Neil stand out compared to other artists. He really does NOT make music for us, he does it for himself and the music.
That's just the way it is and it's the only right way.

Peter Dees

I got tickets for both shows at the Ryman. First night up in the balcony and the second on the floor 8 rows back. Last time I saw Young it was in New York at the garden, which was an excellent show. By the way, that quote from the New Yorker was not fake. Here's the rest of it.

I'm sure this quote is real. When Neil says he hates the audience, he's not talking about you personally or that he despises the people who buy his records. He's talking about the fact that when he's into making his music he doesn't want to be distracted by spotlights highlighting the audience or people waving their arms trying to get him to make eye contact or the drunken asshole in the front row calling out for Rocking in the Free World between and during every song. I totally get him. Is this something new? The moment he starts pandering and playing *to* the audience instead of himself is the moment you get the fake choreographed canned performance you get from some many other performance artists. The reason I go into every single Neil Young gig within my reach is that I never know if he's going to walk off the stage, break into an awesome rendition of a familiar song that I've never heard played this way before, or sing 10 songs in a row about his new pet car project. And I cherish every *ing moment of it.

RM,
It sounds like you should be spending your hard earned cash on anger management classes as opposed to Neil tickets ... just remember there were hundreds of other people who would have been glad to have spent the money to have your seat, you didn't do Neil any favors by buying a ticket ... its called supply and demand and right now there's more demand (for Neil) than supply ... in terms of the comment, if its true, I agree he's referring to the pseudo fan that shows up, not the hard core fans that have the sense to not yell out requests, ect... during the '07 theatre show I showed up with my wife to sit in our first row loge section right as the concert was about to start and had a guy that looked (and acted) like a gang member and his girlfriend sitting in my seats and the guy threatened me and wouldn't get out ... it took until 2/3rd into the acoustic set before his ass was kicked out of my seats by security ... I think Neil's referring to punks like that who have no business showing up ... so don't be so sensitive I doubt Neil hates you personally ...

Neil can hate who he wants- I don’t blame him. He still makes GREAT MUSIC. I've been to some shows where the audience was just brutal! And Neil wants to make music..to play. I don’t blame him for being resentful. A Neil show is not a Dead or a Phish show- it’s not a party. It’s an emotional thing- Neil takes you an emotional rollercoaster that’s quite exhilarating. Neil wants you to listen- enjoy the music and applaud when the song is over- not yell and scream and call out songs the whole time, especially at a solo acoustic thing. Neil is never one to tip-toe around a subject and this is just him being himself. Right on Neil!

Homesick, didn't see where you posted the whole thing, but it does sound like something Young would say! By the way, he never said he hated the audience. I would feel a little uneasy if he was up there singing hating us all. He said he hated looking at the crowd, and the hand waving and whistle blowing too I'd imagine. During the 07' tour in Boston, at the Orpheum, the crowd was mostly cool and didn't yell out too much while he was playing. That's just a silly thing to do really and it seems to happen quite a bit with these small shows. Anyway, I'm jazzed about the two nights at the Ryman.

So Concert Promoter extraordinaire Jimmy Koplik was on my local classic Rock station this morning answering questions from listeners asking about upcoming shows and bands- touring info. So I said "what the hell?", and tried calling in. I told the call screener that I wanted to ask about Neil Young- so while on hold the DJ asked the question for me and Jimmy (the promoter) answered "Actually, Neil is going out on a solo acoustic tour this spring and we're bringing him to the Oakdale in Wallingford, in May- tickets go on sale this weekend" So I was ecstatic- but my question was answered so I hung up. So with the minute or so delay I listened to this question and response again only after Jimmy answered the DJ tried to go to me and all you heard was me yelling "AAALLLLL RRIIIGGGGHHHHHTT! and hang up. The DJ says "the last thing I heard was alright! Then I think he fell on the floor" Haha. Hopefully he wasnt going to offer me free tickets but oh well.
This is a great time to be a Neil fan! A solo acoustic tour is greatest! I LOVE Crazy Horse but Neil acoustic is something entirely different.
Is it just me that gets thrilled every-time Neil comes around? The anticipation, the getting tickets, the waiting? The greatest part is that Neil never disappoints- I've been let down by other live acts (believe me!) but Neil always gives 110%. Never-ever is it like seeing a retro, old-fogey act. I hope they officially announce all the shows soon.
Really, try not to let bitterness, resentment, etc. get in your way. If you don't go you'll regret it and you'll miss out on a fantastic concert. If you can afford it, go!

Rock on NEIL!

Ed: A Neil Young Solo Tour

Karnack: (ffffftt)
What is to expect sold out theatres with the setlist comprising many standard and classic tunes with several unrecorded songs being played to audiences as a rehersal before entering the studio for final release recording of a new album as a reprise of the Harvest Moon tour as predicated by the out of order release of Dreaming Man as part of the performance series of Archival Releases.

It's confirmed, Neil will be performing at Shea's Performing Theater in Buffalo N.Y. on 5/19/2010. I've been checking the website every day and it was posted late last night. I called at 9AM this morning and tickets go on sale at the box office at 10.AM on 4/10/2010. This is great news because my wife might be able to go with me. We had front row seats there for the Chrome Dreams Tour on 11/30/07. If I can get 3rd row or better Buffalo seats I will list my Louisville 3rd row PIT seat on eBay. I will sell it for just what it cost me. Watch for it. My eBay user ID is Tuned4life.

Quite sad to read Neil's comment about hating his audience. He didn't just call out on hecklers etc, he was making a generalization.
Listening to Massey Hall or other gigs I hear an artist who enjoys sharing his music with his audience... Neil's stories, his jokes, don't tell me that's an artist who hates his audience telling these. He sounds really bitter right now, and if you don't like your audience you shouldn't do a tour playing huge venues and festivals really.

His music is still awesome, but up til now I always thought of Neil as a nice guy. Lately he seems more of an ass, and I don't really see how some of you can still defend his person?

Message for Neil Young from MissVanGogh;
Dear Mr. Young,
This is being sent to show the interest of having you play in the Kansas City area for a benefit to working with people with TBI/Epilepsy. A focus group was started over four years ago in Lawrence, Kansas after seizures started and cars were wrecked. As an art teacher, there were restrictions placed in school districts and things to accept about judgement made by the educated. Even people with disabilities get fired and not even accepted to do volunteer work at the hospital as an art therapist. My TBI/Epilepsy Focus Group meets monthly at the library and I do not have anything to work with in the budget. If you would consider bringing your talent and music to the mid-west, it would be a step towards education in society about the tbi/epileptic culture. There is such a great range of talent, intelligence, and beauty with everyone who has to accept this on a daily basis. The focus group is epsugroup@gmail.com. Hope to hear from you in the future!

Here's a snippet, for all the fanboys in the front row, from the current New Yorker: "(In the film, a camera mounted on the drums captures Young as he plays the last, distorted notes of a long jam in “No Hidden Path.” Behind him, in the front row, members of the audience look as though they had been robbed of their belongings in the main plaza of a foreign city. Demme has said in the past that he believes no concert film should ever include shots of the audience.)

J.D.: As long as there is a musician in the foreground, it’s O.K. to show the audience.

I hate looking at them."

Friends,
Saw this on the Oakdale Theatre site:

ANNOUNCEMENT: Neil Young at Toyota Presents Oakdale on 5/23 in a solo acoustic show! Tickets on sale Monday, 4/8 at Livenation.com!

While dreaming about going to the Ryman shows, discovered that $100 tickets are still available for both shows, amazing...

After the Chrome Dreams show at Oakdale, swore I would not go back there. The crowd yakked and blathered and acted like jerks thru out the whole show. Even during the electric set, it was depressing... Neil commented about it, and sort of dissed the venue too. So, how about United Palace again?

N.Y.: Yeah, but generally we hate the fucking audience. They disturb the whole thing.

When reading the interview I took this quote to mean 'we' being Demme and Young, hate the audience (shots) in concert films.
I was thinking about it last night while watching the Elvis Costello show with Bono and The Edge.
The shots of the audience were distracting and odd as if they had been edited out of sequence. Even worse were the squirm inducing shots of people laughing, clapping, nodding much too enthusiastically as if they has been coached.
So I agree with Neil and Jonathan I hate seeing the audience too.
All that waving around.

Hi, I am new to the forum and plan to see Neil on his coming tour in Albany, NY (this May). Is there any way I can get a list of songs he should be performing, or at least a good guess of such?.. (I've never been to Neil's concert, so have no clue of what songs are performed)

Tnx!
assaf

Asaf, your guess is as good as anybody´s, as Neil´s acoustic solo setlists usually are so dynamic you can´t really say what he plays at all before the first gig of the tour.

But if he doesn´t do all new songs like on the Greendale Tour you could guess at least the opener, which could be one of the following: On The Way Home, Tell Me Why(unlikely though), Comes A Time, Look Out For My Love or The Old Laughing Lady.

And that´s just possibilites for the first song he could play, the rest is even much more open for surprises for anyone, so there really isn´t a chance for guessing anything.

But if you had to recommend a few albums to listen to before the concert, would there be any particular ones?..

Thanks again,

Okay, so, what would be the perfect acoustic set? I would bet that he won't do many of those that he did on the last small venue tour.. Now, here's a real hodge-podge, but these are THE songs I'd like to hear... and not necessarily in this order:

> Six new songs
> Interstate
> Citizen Kane Junior Blues
> Journey through the Past (piano)
> Stringman(since he's still at the piano)
> Natural Beauty
> The Old Laughing Lady
> Crime in the City
> Ambulance Blues (With Bert Jansch, since Neil admits he ripped off some of the melody)
> No Wonder
> War of Man
> I Believe in You
> Four Strong Winds
> The Loner
> Razor Love
> I Am a Child

A mixture of new and old, and unreleased (pre- Archives Volume II)....
May 24th looms with such anticipation.

Now that's a great set list though I'd add Mideast Vacation, Hitchhiker (like an Inca), Dance,Dance,Dance, Cowgirl In the Sand (acoustic), and I can always dig Sugar Mountain live and as much Tonight's the Night Material as possible.
Who agrees that when it comes to Neil playing old songs- its not the hits/standards we care about its the oddities and the rarely performed live stuff.
Man, I cant wait for the Show!
Imagine if he played "Will to Love" for the fist time live!

Would love to hear a "Borrowed Tune," or "New Mama," or even an acoustic "Cortez." Perhaps even a "Vampire Blues" given our fucked-up energy policy that's now wrecking the Gulf of Mexico. Neil might have a thing or two to say about that!

I'm hoping for a Peter Gabriel cover through the harmonic "Scratch My Back/I'll Scratch Yours" Daniel Lanois convergence. Neil singing "Here Comes the Flood" would be gorgeous.

First, let me know if this is inappropriate on this site - if so, I'll try to figure out something else - I'd rather have the tickets used by someone who really wants to see Neil - getting to see the artists you really want to see live is getting tougher and tougher these days.

Jennifer: Neil will be playing in my backyard in Brady (set up is next to the garage) on July 5th at 1pm. We'll be serving Farmland Bratwurts and garlic bread. Rick Rosas has turned the bass guitar duties over to David Lindley, as Rick is in charge of making the margueritas/dacquaris and serving them to the guests. There seems to be an issue about whether Crazy Horse members will be allowed on site (they owe money to Dairy Queen at the Interstate exit). All dogs must be leashed. No coolers larger than 24 cubic feet allowed. We'll be serving bottled cerveza in ice-chilled horse tanks. The last bit of consternation is whether to serve Rolling Rock or Leinenkugels. Will all persons who read this blog please vote on one of these two choices. Thanks for participating. JERRY

I'll be open to sympathy, and to beauty, and to the cacaphony of sounds, from all around, that make me think of our own fate. Be here now. With all we know, we still wait, for someone else to pull our plow and till the earth, and bring us mirth, as if we couldn't bear the weight. We'll get straight, somehow.

Saw the Albany show. Neil gets better with age. His voice is still perfectly in tune and right on! And he plays even better. I've probably seen Neil 25-30 times over the last near-40 years. As much as I love him, I, too, have to say the show was a bit of a disappointment. He was very quiet - hardly any commentary at all. And the show was quite short by Neil standards. I was used to getting more bang for my buck - that's what he always offers. Will I go again? Absolutely! Hey, traveled nearly 300 miles for this one!

Since I live in Nebraska, and there have been no dates posted beyong the six-weeks of eastern shows, I'll bide my time. The disparaging comments about the length of the shows so far I find disheartening. It seems fans can not be satisfied, in this day and age. Neil's been playing a 15 to 18song playlist (ten classics and five new songs). If you paid $150, that figures out to about ten dollars per song. If Neil's brain anneurism had not ben successfully handled with surgeryfour years ago, and you were left with the sad alternative, don't tell me you wouldnt't pay $10 per song to see Neil perform live again. I had good seats for the Greendale Tour, paid $110 apiece. No one at the show had heard a single one of the songs (except the encore Rockin in the Free World) prior to the show. But, in 2025, that album will be considered a classic, and I felt privliged to see it for the price. I saw Neil's Living with War tour show four times that summer. Every time I sat down it cost me a little over $100. BUT, we saw 30 songs live(with CSN on all of them)each night. What memories! I hope I never hear the a critical "too short" again, from any fan of Neil.

Hey Jerry;

I was the first to post on the First show of the Tour.....I didn't have any issue with the length of the show. As I mentioned, Main show was awesome. The 2 songs for the encore was a little bizarro ..... only because I would have expected any of the songs he didn't play from decade or harvest.....All in All ..... Good show for his first in over 10 yrs solo tour.

Neil - I wanted to thank you for the autograph to my daughter Nicolette. Yes, she was named after Nicolette Larson twenty years ago. Thrity years ago I would sit on a front gate of the Einseidelerhof Airforce Depot in West Germany listening to you and Nicolette sing on Comes a Time. I knew then if I had a daughter some day I would give her that beautiful name. I turned 50 this year in March and I was determined to see you in concert. My wife Neena, daughter Nicolette went through great pain and anxiety to secure tickets but it was accomplished. We Never set out to seek an autograph or to seek your appearence other than to watch your show. We had met Doug earlier in the parking lot and he shared his hearfelt story with us and we shared our story about naming our daughter after Nicolette Larson. We later returned after dinner and I wanted a picture of your bus before the show and it all was magical from there. I have heard you speak in interviews on how you feel about giving out autographs. I wanted to again thank you for extending the kindness to me and my family and there could never be a monetary value to the spirit that connects us all. Bill

Worcester... an amazing show! Neil was in fine form. First, since it's been spoken about so much on this site, let me say that those whining about the show length and ticket prices should be ashamed. This guy pours his heart out for a solid 1:40. Sure, I could listen to him for 4 hours. I've seen him perform longer in the past, but that doesn't take anything away from this great evening. The show is what it is... and that's pretty amazing. Just you and Neil (along with some other fans of course... why not share). Like he invited you into his living room. The personal nature of the show... the intimacy of the small theater... just hanging out with a living legend... the one on one... PRICELESS.

Same set list as previous 2 shows, except closed with Heart of Gold, replacing Hey Hey, My My. Was fantastic to watch Neil go from instrument to instrument, tender songs to big electric that filled the auditorium as if there were many musicians (especially on songs like Hitchhiker and Cortez it was as if the sound went right thru you).

The Hanover theater was GREAT... everything about it. Great acoustics, amazing seats (comfortable and lots of room btw the aisles), the ushers are all volunteers and professional... even a concierge in the lobby (didn't see anyone using him, but still was cool). What added GREATLY to the show was that the crowd was UNBELIEVABLY RESPECTFUL... thanks to everyone who attended for that! For a solo show like this it's so nice to be able to give the artist the respect and quiet they need for their talent to be fully appreciated. Even Neil thanked the crowd. Oh yeah, crowd was super for Bert Jansch during the opening as well.

Favorite Neil Comment: He wore a white hat during the show... and as he walked over to one of the keyboards, fidgeting around, tells the crowd, "I got a new hat" (the crowd applauds)... then he says, "This isn't it." (crowd laughs). He says something like, "Yeah, I like this old one a lot."

If you can get to any show on this tour, GO. Thanks Neil!

Was at the show in Oakdale, CT. The show started a bit late, Neil came on after 9:15. He opened with an acoustic set that was dead on, his voice was fantastic, played a few new songs that sounded really good. There were a few idiots in the crowd that were screaming out his name. The electric section was a little disappointing, 3 or 4 minute versions of Down by the River and Cortez the Killer, along with many new songs. Neil loves the electric reverb and there was plenty of it, it overpowered the hall. I think he did more new songs than old. He did one encore, another new song that was very nice, but no Heart of Gold. Don't think I will ever go back to the Oakdale Theatre in Ct, way too many rules and restrictions

At 5/24/2010 02:38:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The show at Oakdale was spectacular, but the idiot quotient was way up there. Unfortunately, the loudest, rudest guys sat DIRECTLY BEHIND us. Fortunately, the upper sections weren't full, so we were able to move. How anyone can think that sort of behavior is acceptable is beyond me. Security should have tossed them during Bert Janch's set. Read the posts about the respectful audience in Worcester with pangs of envy!

Disappointing that you chose not to put up my post. You might say it was because it was unsigned, but there are many that are unsigned. I suppose it was really because it didn't compliment the man. Brilliant as he is, I really feel he let the fans down. But it's your site so... your choice. In case you change your mind, here it is again:

First let me say that we have been fans since Harvest came out. But Neil is one of many that we have never gotten to see live. For my birthday, my wife bought me tickets for the show on Fri May 21 at Hanover Theatre Worcester, MA. Yes we had the expensive seats, but that’s not my point.

When you go to see someone do a solo show, and especially when they do have a history of playing at least some of there music acoustically (and the promos show him playing acoustic guitars), you anticipate an acoustic show. What we got was Neil saving money by not hiring a band, slamming our ears and our pockets, screaming through 2 minute versions of his rock hits.

Bert Jansch was wonderful. Neil started out just as we had hoped. But that unfortunately that didn't last long. Most rockers would take the time to rework their hits so that thy can be presented on an acoustic guitar, providing a truly memorable experience. Most would also bring back their opener (especially when it is someone they considered a mentor) and played some duet material. Neil Young put absolutely no effort into preparing a show for his fans.

Over the last few years, we have gone to see many of the legendary performers we have loved. This show was one of the most disappointing shows we have ever seen, and we have one question...

Where do we file for a refund for the money wasted seeing it?

Matt & Chris in Massachusetts

At 5/25/2010 01:02:00 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Just got back from the D.C. show...where do I get a refund? I didn't know we were going to get a reverb clinic...the man can obviously play guitar and his voice was really phenomenal on the opening songs...so why did we get bombarded all night with horrible reverb and barely audible vocals? Play the guitar well, play it as hard as you want, but my god, let's just keep it simple and true!

The opening act was absolutely awful...can't remember his name and all he made me do was contemplate suicide while he played. 200 bucks for less than 1.5 hours? Are you kidding me? I'm not a huge Neil Young fan, but I know and appreciate a lot of his music. I really was amazed by the first four songs he did; great vocals, fantastic guitar skills....why did it turn out so bad in the end?

The song about "little ones" on the piano was awful...just wished he'd have quit banging on those same notes after the first minute...the song on the organ was even worse. And then we went to reverb central. Really awful, glad when it ended. Hugely disappointing.

Saw Neil last night at DAR Constitution Hall in DC. Had a lot of trouble with the price, since times are tough, and was definitely put off by the fact that we were charged a LOT more than at other venues in other cities.

I actually went to Ebay a couple times prior to the show, tempted to sell them, but have wanted to see Neil solo for a long time . . . He's the reason I picked up the guitar and started to play.

Well, I had tears in my eyes 3 times last night. The first started when he came out and started playing the acoustic . . . Tell Me Why is one of my all time favorites and one of the first I learned to play, and it was incredible.

Really, I thought the whole show was . . . Even the new stuff sounded really nice, and will buy the album if he lays that stuff down which I hope he does. Overall I had no problem with his song selection, and enjoyed what he did play a great deal.

That being said, the second time tears came to my eyes was when the house lights went up. 90 minutes? For $200 a seat?? Seriously, I don't expect Neil to do what Bruce Sprinsteen does, and I'd rather see Neil for 90 minutes than Bruce for four hours . . . But Gosh, if you are charging that much, would it hurt to sit down with the acoustic for a few more at the end. Was really disappointed with that.

The third time tears came to my eyes last night was when I got home and paid the baby sitter (okay figuratively this time!), and realized between the tickets, dinner, parking and the sitter I had dropped $600 I really don't have.

Look, I am grateful to Neil, and think of him as one of the biggest musical influences in my life, maybe only second to the Beatles . . . Just felt like I got left a little short last night. I think from the comments I heard walking out that most of the audience felt that way too.

Neil was like a little kid in a sandbox. It made for an intimate peek. He was enthralled and his energy was extraordinarily beautiful.
However, he didn’t really pay attention to who was out there.
He just drew the energy innocently like it was simply nature. But his perfect absorption also meant that when his die hard grunge fans raised the roof, he was thrust over towards his electric guitars a little too often, and with more and more reckless abandon, was drawn into the pool of seat shaking volume.
He was a one man band, complete with intuitive dynamics, spot on hook lines and solos, and eloquence just flowing. He had the stage arranged hap hazardly with his favorite pianos and guitars, like the dingy inside of a bar. And, between songs would wander around following the lure. He’d rub his chin in contemplation, and quickly decide “yes, this is good”. Then would come the next offering. Just as patient and deliberate as you please. He sunk into every song, whether it was a popular one or not. He showed loyalty to all his lyrics.
He didn’t speak much. But his entourage (the audience) thrilled to every nuance and stood up cheering at every opportunity. I marveled at his huge talent. And his tall frame wisping and grooving like a boy of twenty. You are really something, you know..

When I was a hitchhiker on the road
I had to count on you
But you needed me to ease the load
And for conversation too
Or did you just drive on through.

You didn't see me in Toronto
When I first tried out some hash
Smoked through a pen and I'd do it again
But I didn't have the cash
I didn't have the cash

Then I tried amphetamines
And my head was in a glass
Taped underneath the speedometer wires
Of my '48 Buick's dash.
But I knew that wouldn't last.

Then came California
Where I first saw open water
In the land of opportunity
I knew I was getting hotter
I knew I was getting hotter.

But the neon lights
And the endless nights
The neon lights
And the endless nights
The neon lights
And the endless nights
The neon lights
And the endless nights
They took me by surprise
The doctor gave me Valium
But I still couldn't close my eyes
I still couldn't close my eyes.

Then came paranoia
And it ran away with me
I couldn't sign my autograph
Or appear on TV
Or see or be seen
See or be seen
Or see or be seen.

Living in the country
Sounded good to me
Smoking grass while the summer passed
In the real organic sea
Where everything was green
Everything was green.

Then we had a kid and we split apart
I was living on the road
A little cocaine went a long long way
To ease that different load
But my head did explode
My head did explode.

I wish I was an Aztec
Or a runner in Peru
I would build such beautiful buildings
To house the chosen few
Like an Inca from Peru.

Many Years have come and gone
Like friends and Enemies
I tried to leave my past behind
But it's catching up with me

I don't know how I'm standing here
Living my life
I'm thankful for my children
And my Faithful wife

Austin, TX June 5 Concerth at The Bass Concert Hall:
Being a long time fan of Neil Young, I appreciated his perfomance last night. It was my first time seeing him in concert. I would have expected songs like, "I am a Child", Heart of Gold, "Long may you run", A Man Needs a Maid", but know that an artist has to keep things fresh and that means not simply repeating the tried and true songs that have been performed thousands of times. The accoustics in the Bass are really great. Thanks to my wife buying me tickets for my Birthday. "I love You!"

Of course Neil's home is also between Oakland and Portland. Like 30 minutes from the Oakland theatre. Decompresing on the ranch for a couple of days might be more to Neil's advantage than tolerating 'sin city' for even 24 hours. Just sayin'.

Okay, not to sound like a whiny bitch, but I just tried to buy tickets for Calgary with the pre-sale, and the prices were $145US even though TM lists them at $90CDN when they go on sale Saturday. What's with the price difference?

JERRY: It appears Neil is heading out west after all! Will you still be hosting the backyard concert in Brady? If yes, I vote for Rolling Rock. I am tempted to by tickets to the Portland show, but think I will continue to hold out for a Colorado date. Not sure the family Winnebago will make it all the way to Oregon. Keep on rockin' JENNIFER

Jennifer: What a shame about July 3rd backyard concert! But I did check and there are still reasonably priced tickets available in Portland. (that is too far for me to travel, I'n changing jobs and states at the end of July). But, we are going to concert that evening anyway. Steve Winwood and Carlos Santana are playing in the 20th annual "Saturday in the Park" (last Saturday before July 4) "free" outdoor public concert at Grand View City Park, in Sioux City Iowa, Saturday, July 3. Five acts will play on the main stage, starting at noon. Blankets and lawnchairs are permitted, but, no coolers & no bottles. There is a second stage for alternative music, a kid's stage, and a ropped off beer-garden with a view of the main stage. NO ADMISSION CHARGE. Winwood takes the stage at 6:45pm and Santana at 8:45 pm. Fireworks show immediatley following Santana conclusion. If you live anywhere nearby, come on down! I've seen BB King, The Neville Brothers, Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks, Los Lobos, and the Allman Brothers Band at this annual show the four years that I could make it.

I just got two tickets to the Seattle Paramount show in July. Incredibly psyched. I'll take Neil any way he wants...solo electric...solo acoustic...duo...trio...brass band...whatever. This will be the third time I've seen Neil at the Paramount which is an awesome venue.

Hey Mason,

Do you think people on the main floor will be able to go up to the stage at the Paramount show in Seattle? Or they not let you do that there.

Thanks,

Billy

Saw Neil at the Fox Theater in Oakland, Sunday, July 11, 2010. It was a relatively rare local performance from Neil, aside from his Bridge School Benefit concerts down in Mountain View.

He stuck to the identical set list from previous shows on the tour, with minimal audience interaction and no mention of returning to play for his local fans.

Neil's performance was intense and inspired. Rockin' out a small hall on the electric guitar is typical contrarian Neil. He played for less than 90 minutes. It's your dollar and it's up to you to determine if it's worth spending $200.

Billy - my recollection is that the Paramount seats people in the space right in front of the stage but I'm not positive. As you probably know, Seattle tends to be a "shut up and listen" type of crowd which can get interesting when dudes start yelling "Turnstiles!" between songs.

Hey I hate to be anonymous but don't want to be spammed either. How about a login on The Well?
I asked about chilled out events on the coast. I/we all love Neil's music and as he is "gettin' old" like me maybe it is too much to ask. But I'm an old hippie and can't pay those Live Nation prices.

It's sometimes seems that I am shipwrecked "on the beach" where none of the natives know of NY's existence. Personally, I still own mono copies of the first two Buffalo Springfield albums which I purchased when I was 10 or 12 years old right after they were released. If there is anyone in Montgomery, AL who is a HUGE NY fan and has been for ages, please email me! I'm married with two grown boys so my wife and I live in our empty nest in Capitol Heights. We don't have a chance to meet many NY fanatics here in Montgomery, if they truly exist. Of course, we have friends who like a little NY here and there but I'm afriad we are far beyond that so they quickly tire of listening to Neil with us. BTW, GREAT work Thrasher! Lastly, I hope that I am not making inappropriate use of this comment space. My motives are most certainly sincere and intended to be beneficent. Maybe I am just getting lonely and flippin' out but you know how "time fades away!" Robino
