Comment of the Moment: "Best Kept Secret"

The Neil Young Comment of the Moment is from Psychic Ills and On The Beach by BIGCHIEF:

Neil Young is an artist's artist. There is no conceivable way to measure his influence over the years especially in the late sixtys/early seventies in the so called 'country rock' genre. It still pains me whenever artists who were obviously influenced by Neil fail to give him his props in interviews. To me he has always been musics 'best kept secret'.Lately, however, it seems that more and more giants in the industry are coming forward acknowledging their respect such as Dylan, McCartney, Springsteen. When asked what C.D. he had in his car stereo right now, Bob Seeger replied 'Silver & Gold'.

We all know that out of 600-700 songs, radio plays the 6 or 7, never deviating and giving exposure to the more obscure songs. I suppose he will remain our 'best kept secret'which probably is the way it should be since he never intended to manufacture his career for mass appeal .. the fans that he has are truly his fans - we get it. That's the beauty of this site to be able to celebrate his legacy with other like minded fans in a way that was once limited to a concert venue.

Even Elton John said he almost pissed himself during a duet performance with Neil. McCartney bowing down before him during 'A Day In The Life'? I mean, come on!.. Dylan recently visiting his childhood home? and so it goes with all of my suppressed zeal, I have to consciously refrain from spreading the gospel according to Neil because, quite frankly, after 40 years they still just don't get it!"

Thanks BIGCHIEF!

You know, I find it incredible how many people "don't get it." It's amazing to me. So many people hear On the Beach or Sleeps with Angels (when I invariably whip out my trusty CD and announce, "You have GOT to hear this man, this shit is the most transcendental stuff since the dawn of sound...), and then they give me a shrug, and say, "Eh, it's alright."

Eh? Alright??? WTF?

Of course, I couldn't get anybody to "get" Pink Floyd's Atom Heart Mother either, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised...

Crazy people, I swear.

I have found that many times people's range in music taste reflects their 'range' in 'perception' of life intricacies. Neil broadcasts his music and his 'muse' from all directions and all angles. He is the ultimate storyteller from an inter- and outer- personal position. He can be everywhere and everyman just as easy as he can be one dimensional. He is his own enigma and contradiction. When one understands this about him they are more likely to 'get it' because they are better able to tune in to the songs and the storylines.

"radio plays 6 or 7"? around HERE (the baltimore/washington area) radio doesn't play THAT many...that's OK, I can hear UNION MAN, PRESSURE, or PAYOLA BLUES anytime I want to--that's what iPods are for

Here in Ottawa, Canada, I guess we're lucky: We get a Neil Young radio show every Sunday, for TWO hours! All Neil, all the time (for two hours)!

Yes, DBTR usually gets played, but so do a lot of rarities. It's a on a classic rock station that plays some pretty unpredictable music for at least two hours/week!

Hey bigsby - that's awesome! Do they stream online? We could definitely use something like that around here. All we get in New Jersey is all top-40, all the time, and a couple of college stations that play abstract noise and heavy metal.

I do appreciate abstract noise and heavy metal of course, but I'd much prefer a Neil Young station.
