Randomly Blogged: Hold Back The Tears on YouTube, Everest, Jeff Tweedy, TFA Vinyl

"Hold Back The Tears" by Neil Young at Sarah McLachlan Foundation Concert, Vancouver, September 12, 2009.

  • From Aquarium Drunkard: Everest On An Alternate Neil Young:
Last year Everest found themselves on tour with Neil Young. If you are familiar with their debut LP, Ghost Notes, or their live show for that matter, then the pairing makes absolute sense. In the wake of the Archives: Volume I box set, Everest’s Joel Graves runs down, and shares his thoughts, on some of his favorite lesser known tracks in the Shakey catalog. As a card-carrying Neil freak, this has personally been one of my favorite Diversions entries thus far.
“Bandit” :: (Greendale) – My friend was telling me the other day about how he used to hate Neil’s voice when he was younger.  Now, he loves it.  Neil has a funny way of doing that.  I think at this point, everybody knows that his music is not about clinical perfection.  Who wants that?  He’s about honesty and framing the songs with integrity.  That’s why they ring true.  “Bandit” opens with a guitar tuned down from the standard low E, all the way to B flat.  The rattling and wheezing low note that this tuning produces is a perfect example of Young shaping his instrument’s voice to suit the song.  It’s fucked up … to perfection.

I could make another Neil song list tomorrow and it would look completely different. It’s like having the wind in your record collection.

  • From The 6149:
This past week I made my first visit to one of the record shops on my London Record Shop Search Map. My wife and I were in Notting Hill to look for places to live. I planned ahead, knowing that Rough Trade Records had one of their outposts there, and brought along the gift certificates my good Aussie mate, Kip gave to me

When in doubt, go to Neil.

And there it was...an album worthy of my first purchase in a London record shop: "Time Fades Away" by Good Ol' Neil Young. This album was released in 1974...on vinyl...and has never been put out on CD or up for download by Neil.  Neil fan(atics) have long hollered for its release.  In fact, the supreme Neil site, Thrasher's Wheat, has collected over 114,000 signatures in their online petition to have it released (yeah, I've signed on).

I picked up a copy for 25 quid. It is a UK pressing on Reprise. It is in mint condition, complete with inside poster/fold out of all lyrics and listings.

This album is soaked in mystique and lore. It is part of the "Ditch Trilogy".  Cameron Crowe replicated the album cover in a scene in his movie, "Almost Famous" (of which I am in awe of, jealous of and a huge fan of). In the flick, at the first Stillwater show, there is a rose lying on the stage and a man in front of the stage raising his arm, thus recreating the cover of Time Fades Away.

Thanks 6149! Enjoy TFA on vinyl! It's final.

  • From Glide Magazine interview with Wilco's Jeff Tweedy by Jason Gonulsen:
"And I figured out a long time ago that Neil Young is my songwriting hero—that will likely never change, and that is fine. But, I was once convinced that he was the only songwriter whose words would ever mean anything to me; his albums were all I listened to—particularly Zuma, Sleeps with Angels, On the Beach, and Harvest Moon—for a few years. Everything else, it seemed, was not up to par, which I’ve now found to be the worst mistake you can make when trying to find new music. When you start looking for something better, or something that is exactly is supposed to sound like something you already love, you are already trapped."

  • From STREET TEASE:
"In an interview with Elliot Roberts, Neil's manager, Roberts was asked about a comment Nils Lofgren made about Neil Young inventing punk rock:

Elliot Roberts: 'Well, I think that came from the first Sex Pistols interviews when Sid Vicious was interviewed in America and was asked what his big influences were and he said that one of them was Neil's Tonight's The Night tour, which he'd seen in Manchester in 1973, because it was so dark and raw and anti-pop and he had done none of his old songs. The fans booed it after they thought he was gonna do another half of the show when in fact the show was over, and on some level it was that anti-pop attitude that people interpret as the start of the Punk movement which was an aggression and hostility. '"

    Thrasher's: Thx for the mention.

Yes, a decent copy of TFA isn't that hard to find. Finding it was the sum of the parts of the story.

Too bad my turntable is still being shipped over from Australia. I'll have to wait three more weeks to put needle to record. Cheers. Judd6149
