Hi Thrasher

Cool poster, any word of a UK/European release date?

Thought Neil's last film offerings (Heart of Gold, CSNY) were brilliant and I'm sure Trunk Show will be as well- he was amazing during the tour.

Thanks

Sean

Cool.

Saw the show in London several months later and there were cameras all over the place. they moved a guy in our row (row 3) dead center to use his seat to film. Had little cameras on booms hovering just above neil as he played. Saw this tour 2x and it was AWSOME.

Cant wait for release here in Europe.

This was published on an Australian website by someone who had been to the south by southwest music conf earlier this year

"Director Jonathan Demme, Shakey Pictures head L.A. Johnson and Neil Young business partner Elliot Roberts, spent Saturday afternoon at the movies. The occasion was for the first-ever big screen viewing of the Demme directed ‘Neil Young Trunk Show’.
This is the movie I didn’t even know existed until I arrived in Austin.
Demme, the man behind Philadelphia and Silence of the Lambs, had been working on this movie as an electric companion to his last Young flick, ‘Heart Of Gold’.
‘Neil Young Trunk Show’ captures a moment from the recent Chrome Dreams tour. Demme told the audience that it wasn’t a planned film, it was spur of the moment. “This was the easiest film in the world to make,” he said.
Demme first worked with Young on ‘Year of the Horse’ after Young supplied the soundtrack to his other movie ‘Dead Man’, starring Johnny Depp.
The central piece of ‘Truck Show’ is the epic live version of the stunning Chrome Dreams track ‘No Hidden Path’.
The movie also features some Young rarities. As a bookend, the opening song in ‘Sad Movies’ and the closer is ‘The Sultan’. ‘Kansas’, another unreleased Young song is also played midway through the movie.
As I mentioned, this movie seemed to come from nowhere but it cements the most prolific period ever for Shakey Pictures, Young’s movie company.
Last year, Shakey Pictures released the biting ‘Déjà vu’ documenting the damage done from the Bush regime from the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young ‘Freedom of Speech’ tour. Just before that it was the back to basics ‘Heart of Gold’.
Soon, we will also be seeing Neil’s “Auto” biography Lincvolt about the conversion of a 1959 Lincoln from gas-guzzling environmental terror into an environmentally safe machine.
As for the music roll-out from Young this year.
The timeline goes:
April – Fork In The Road
June – Archives
September – Toast

The songs from Neil Young Trunk Show are:
Sad Movies (previously unreleased)
Harvest
Cinnamon Girl
Oh Lonesome Me
Kansas
Spirit Road
No Hidden Path
Ambulance Blues
Mellow My Mind
The Believer
Like A Hurricane
Cowgirl In The Sand
The Sultan "

Great tracklist, with some rarities and classics!

Cheers,

Mick

I remember the shush sign posted in Philadelphia. Nice to have this tour on film. It really was a special treat to hear the songs from the new release "Chrome Dreams" and some of the rarities like "Ambulance Blues" and "Love Art Blues" and "Out on the Weekend." How 'bout that "O Lonesome Me" ballad? And everyone looked great, too. I mean, they're taking good care of themselves ...

@RSS - I think at the show I went to in London during March '08 I saw something similar - a guy in the front row actually had to move a few rows back if I remember correctly, to make space for the video recording equip! Which dates did you attend? I was at 5th, 9th and 14th. There were cameras everywhere. That's why I was hoping the London shows would have been used for this movie... they were so magnificent.

This looks great though. I'm excited for it to be released here in the UK.

Dead Man was a Jim Jarmusch film, not a Jonathon Demme one.

Nice stuff with the movie and all. But Mick, the 'Year of the Horse' movie and 'Dead Man' is Jim Jarmush'.
Cant wait to see the new movie. I saw the crome dreams tour 3 times. I gotta say it was over the top:)

Hey Casper,

I know Year of the Horse and Dead Man were not done by Demme. I have copies of both!. I just copy and pasted the whole article from the website when it a few months ago..

Really looking forward to seeing this movie. Hope he releases a soundtrack and a bluray version later!

Cheers,

Mick

Anybody got the scoop on the term 'trunk' for this? Is it 'out of the trunk' with the rarities? like gramma's old dresses?

haven't picked up on it yet.

A "trunk show" is a special sale in which vendors present merchandise directly to store personnel or select customers at a retail location or another unique venue. In many cases it allows store personnel to preview and/or purchase merchandise before it is made available to the public. It is particularly desirable to have the actual designer present at the event.

Too bad the opener "From Hank to Hendrix" isn't part of the tracklist.
I cant express in words how deeply moved I was when he plugged his guitar and started playing, and I guess I'm not the only who shed a tear to that song. Great set list though.

I agree - "From Hank to Hendrix" was great when I saw the show in Minneapolis. Fact is, the whole show was just awesome. "Ambulance Blues" was great. Can't wait for this movie!

nice to see it's comming out soon, but I do wish there were more songs included. I cant imagine why the setlist is so limited.... what about "Love Art Blues", "Noone seems to know" , "Journey Thru the Past", "The Loner", and a few others could have been included....
disapointing

The March 14th & 15th 2008 Hammersmith shows were filmed by Tim Pope.

See his website (www.timpope.tv)
for a couple of innarestin' blogs on how he got the call to film the shows.(in the snews section scroll down to March 2008 - I think first reference is 11th March)

As a bonus there are a half dozen Neil videos with background info

I have to admit my initial reaction to seeing the song list was dissapointment ... I was thinking he left a bunch of classics out and put a lot of "new" songs in ... then I took a double take, reminded myself that the set list is classic Neil --- make room for the newest, freshing songs at almost any cost -- and so I decided to go with the flow and trust Neil's choices as I've learned over the years to get comfortable with him behind the wheel, then I can sit back, relax and enjoy the ride ... still, I'd be lying if I denied that I'd love to get my hands on the rest of the footage.

The set list is quite different from anything else released live. I dig it. I would buy it for "No Hidden Path" alone!

Will there be a soundtrack companion?

At 9/04/2009 12:43:00 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It might seem like there aren't many songs, but several of those would go for a good 10-20 minutes each.

Its got No Hidden Path and Ambulance Blues, be worth it just for those.

At 9/04/2009 03:51:00 AM, Blogger Mick said...

I think there is a bit of documentary type stuff in the film - I dont think its just a concert movie like Road Rock, so hence a smaller number of songs . Also remember No Hidden Path, LAH are long long songs .

I loved these shows, saw it in Paris, Manchester x 2 and Hop Farm. This looks a great film, no quibles from me with the song list, it looks great.

How many releases is this since Neil's anurism (sic)?

At 9/04/2009 08:10:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Now this is some good news! I really hope there is a soundtrack release for this, because I would hate to be forced to watch it just to hear the music!

At 9/05/2009 05:32:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm amazed at how many people here rate No Hidden Path as some sort of Neil classic. It always struck me as an attempt to write a song like he used to, a forced effort at CITS2 or DBTR2. It's just a cliched rehash of past glories to me.

At 9/06/2009 07:34:00 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No Hidden Path from Madrid last year is incredible. The CDII version is quite anemic in comparison.

Compared to NY other guitar-epics, I feel NHP is induced with light and hope. But i guess NHPs is either seen as hypnotic and absorbing or quite boring, it all comes down to personal taste.

At 9/07/2009 06:40:00 AM, Anonymous Sean O'Leary, DUblin, Ireland. said...

No Hidden Path is a cracker. I saw Neiler in Dublin in 2008 and he played NHP for 27 minutes and every second of it was sublime. Saw him the next night in Cork and he played a 'short' version which came in @ 21 mins. Can't wait to see this movie. The current band are sensational although I'd love to see NY&CH back on the road!

I wish they would re release the Silver and Gold DVD with the full concert. I never could understand why they released it with whatever it was 13 songs when Neil played something like 20 plus (I was at the show the first night). Maybe one of these days.....
