Stockholm, Sweden Neil Young Concert Reviews: 6/12/09

I've seen Neil 12 times and it was nice seeing him opening with an acoustic part and ending with a rocking/jamming part in contrast to this year/last years shows. The festival goes loved Neil - always nice seeing him playing infront of so many young people. They always end up so impressed!

Pegi's vocals really add an extra dimension, and I was happy to see Ben Keith for the firsta time. The man is a genius. But all these tired greatest hits? If one has heard Hey Hey, My My and DLIBYD 10 000 times it's not very challenging. The highlights were Words and two oldies that Neil has actually done something creative with, Pocahontas as a grunge anthem and Free World with a new arrangement. You Americans are lucky, in Europe Neil plays it mostly safe.

Greetings from Stockholm, Sweden, Dear Rusted Ones. (And TW-ed Ones!)
I am sitting here watching the Swedish rain fall (looks a lot like our rain over there) from my window (crank out, no screen) at the beautiful Grand Hotel in Stockholm. A marching band just marched down the street in the rain, a police car wailed its siren in that European way, and suddenly I felt like I was in an old WWII movie. But none of that is what I am here to tell you. However, this will not be one of my usual rambling reviews, because I only have a minute or so, or maybe it will be, because I type fast, we'll see. But anyway, there are some things you simply MUST know, and you must know immediatement. (Uh, no one really speaks French here, but I don't know any Swedish, jah?)
Alright, I'll get on with it.
First of all. The Archives. I have them, I love them, I received them on release date,I had no problems with the Blu Ray set I received, I haven't even scratched the surface of them, I can't wait, absolutely cannot WAIT to do so. I'll have lots to say about content once I've gone through it all I'm sure, but I'm sorry for those of you who either haven't gotten them yet, or had issues, I've scanned some of the stuff on TW and aye yi yi. But for those of you who haven't ordered them, I will say that the Blu Ray stuff I have watched has absolutely blown me away, GO GET IT. That's all I have to say about that, for now.
BUT. I have been out here ON THE ROAD, seeing NEIL YOUNG (PRESENT DAY NEIL YOUNG, FUTURE ARCHIVES MAKING NEIL YOUNG) LIVE. I have been to the shows the last two nights, first Norwegian Wood in Oslo and then Stockholm last night. And I've seen some of the semi negative reports from the European shows, about Neil looking tired, or bored, or boring setlists, etc., etc., and I can't speak for the earlier European shows as I was not there but LET ME TELL YOU THIS! All that has changed now, I saw it with my own eyes, heard it with my own ears, felt it with my own heart. NEIL IS FUCKING ON FIRE, FOLKS, and if I could stay out here on the road with him for the rest of my life I would do so (but he'd have to let me ride on the bus with him, this trying to get around without a map is brutal no matter what the song says.)
Christ almighty I said I only have a minute and I've already gone on and on without telling you THE GOOD STUFF!!!

1. Neil's arrival on stage with "From Hank to Hendrix" made me cry both nights. Sniff. I was moved, to tears, both nights. Actual tears. When he sang "new closeness between us" on the second night I was full out sobbing. Which did not endear me to the young Swedes around me who had almost killed me pogo-ing during the Pixies earlier in the evening. But whatev. (They asked me if I was security. Uh ... No. But still, please stop jumping on me.)

2. The new Pocahontas (which I also saw in New Orleans at Jazzfest) is killer, especially when he sings it the new way with the "they massacred the buffalo" start. For some reason I hold my breath through that entire song now. Good thing I didn't pass out.

3. WORDS. WORDS. I have none. Klunk.

4. The encore of Hurricane in Oslo knocked me out, absolutely knocked me out, the most stunning, mind blowing, world changing, heart stopping, breath taking performance of any song by any one ever in the history of the universe. I don't think I am overstating it. He did that mind blowing repeat the line ... "somewhere safer somewhere safer somewhere safer" over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over, I thought I was going to drop dead. I was literally in a trance. I almost got arrested for trying to climb up there on stage, I was drawn to him like a moth to a flame. (No, I didn't try to climb up there. But I did want to.) I cannot stop thinking about this performance of this song. Talk about Gettin' Blown Away. I am obsessed. All over again.

5. The feedback in Fuckin' Up in Stockholm was also one of the absolute highlights of my concert going, music hearing life. I have never heard anything like it from Neil or anyone else, ever. (Jimi Hendrix has nothing on him.) It went on and on and it was up and down and here and then there and I could feel it coursing through me like it was the blood in my own veins, I feel it still. It was a transcendent psychedelic intimate experience, I felt like I was alone with him in his barn. Truly, it felt like that. It was beyond thrilling, absolutely mind blowing.

I gotta go, but I had to tell you those few things. Oh. And watching Neil these last two nights it occurred to me that ... Neil is the ultimate time traveller. Think about it. He is out there in the present, doing his thing, he's playing songs from the past because that's what people want to hear, and someone is always out there filming or recording it, for the future. He's out there living in the past, the present and the future all at the same time. That's kinda cool, leave it to Neil to figure out time travel. BUT ... Folks. If you have a chance to see Neil out there making his future Archives, do so. HOLY FUCKING SHIT. I love him so much. Words cannot begin to say. That's all I have to say. For now. (Whoops. It WAS long and rambling. Sorry. I type faster than I thought.)

It was worth the drive - great concert, but I missed some of the more not so great hits, that seems to have a greater effect on me - especially when performed live. But then again, it might have to do with me seeing him for the 10.th time, three of those just last year in Denmark(Copenhagen, Falkonersalen was the closest thing i've ever been to a spiritual orgasm - our seats were in the 2. row centerstage)
So I left the concert with the feeling of having missed something, not in the sence that it was bad or anything like that, just that something was missing. And then again - like Karen said, Fuckin' up just blew my mind. Trancended time and space and Neil became the omnipotent power that seemed to consume everything - that alone was worth the 8 hour drive from Copenhagen.
