Archives Open Thread: Wednesday, 6/3/09

archives-vol1-logo-sm.jpg

Here's today's daily open thread on the Neil Young Archives where you can post thoughts and questions.

Archives Guy seems to be checking in on occasion as time permits. But if you know the answer to folks' questions, please try and help out, to free up AG to focus on newer issues.

As we've noted, an Archives FAQ is in the works. In the meantime -- as always -- see Everything You've Ever Wanted To Know About The Neil Young Archives But Were Afraid To Ask.

Folks,

Just a friendly reminder regarding Archives Guy.

Please remember that he is a technical production engineer type.

He is not in the marketing, customer service, shipping & handling dept.

Many issues are completely out of his hands.

With that said, feel free to air concerns but try not direct them to AG for resolution.

He is here primarily to handle issues around playback and enjoyment of the Archives.

Ok, back to listening to the Riverboat. ahhh....

It will be fun to see what happens today. Yesterday was... interesting.

A few thoughts, on the positive side, from someone who hasn't hesitated to be critical in the past:

-those complaining about waiting 20 years and then having to cough up 600 bucks to get the full experience on Blu-Ray:
so, if this set had been introduced in, say, 1965 and Neil had decided that it had to be in stereo, you would think you'd been ripped off because you had to buy something new to play it on? Like when Ford introduced the Model-T you would have been pissed that they didn't just build a better horse? And it's not just the fidelity, it's the ability to have a dynamic archive that (for free) is refreshed and expanded through the years. So you would have preferred that Neil ignore this technology and just produce the DVD or CD set? I understand the frustration if you can't afford the Blu-Ray, but get over it. You can't afford a BMW either, but you manage to get to work. There is simply no way Neil could have provided the optimal experience without Blu-Ray technology.

-For those complaining about having to re-purchase the live albums. I've come about 180 degrees on this issue, or maybe 150 degrees. It's certainly not greed. Neil could easily have chosen other concerts for the archive and sold Fillmore, Massey, etc. as standalones. Also, how do you know you're paying for the concerts again, simply because they're included in the Archive? There is no precedent for the scope of this project so, consequently, there is no precedent for the pricing. At, say, the roughly $275 retail price, you're paying for 10 Blu-Rays. Current prices for the top Blu-Rays on Amazon are $25, so there's $250 in value alone. Let's say we subtract the Fillmore and Massey discs, so the Blu- Ray value is now $200. So, for another $75 you get the book, the packaging, the BD-live capability, and the free MP3s (OK, I know they're not out yet, but they will be.) At Itunes prices the MP3s alone would be $125.

The point being - the set would be worth way more than $275 without the Massey and Fillmore discs, so you're not paying for them again. You're getting them again.

Finally, for those who are desperate for MP3s - the Zune marketplace (if you're one of the three people who own a Zune) has a free 14 day trial period. Rhapsody used to have a free trial period, too, so you might check those out while you're waiting.

Have a great day.

I live in the UK. If I buy the a US copy of NYA on Blu-Ray, I know that the actual discs will work because you've already said they are region-free. But are the MP3 downloads region locked? I ask because US Blu-Ray movies that have a digital copy, don't work in the UK - they are blocked by I-Tunes...

Cheers

Archives Guy,

When I first downloaded information I had 3 or 4 Blue Pins with stuff when I clicked on them now I only have one blue pin- "I Wonder" 1965.

Is this a problem or have I done something wrong

Thanks for your help

Graham.

"But are the MP3 downloads region locked?"

The MP3's do not have region encoding. You'll have no problem with them should they ever be made available.

I won't be getting the blu-ray, but am considering the DVDs. Can anyone here make a list of what is on the individual DVDs that is not on the corresponding CDs.

Thanks!

Hi Archives Guy
It mentions in the Q&A on the Archives site that the first 4 albums are going to be released on blue-ray.
1.Has a release date been decided on yet?
2.Will there be any "extra's" on there that aren't on the archives
(for example the BBC performance would be a great extra for the Harvest Blu-Ray)
3.Will the packaging/artwork be in the same style as the archives and will they fit in the compartment in the archives box?
Sorry for so many questions but it's an exciting time to be a Neil fan.
Thanks

Did anyone else have writing on the pad which was included with the Blu-Ray set? There was a handwritten sentence in pencil (from Neil...?)

I'd appreciate some guidance on what size external memory would be appropriate for the forthcoming BD Live updates. My sony BDP-S550 came with a 1gb memory stick, but I am guessing this is not going to last very long if there are going to be lots of updates in the years ahead.

Thanks in advance

Ran into an issue with the 160gb PS3 and my system (Onkyo 606 with full 1.3 HDMI switching to an older Westinghouse 1080P 42" monitor, no tv tuner onboard). When the disc first loaded and the screen came up to download the new content, the background image didn't load, so I could see the navigation elements (checkmarks on that screen) but couldn't tell what they pointed to because there was no picture. There were only like 4 options so I just tried them all and now know which spot gets the download to start, but wondering if anyone else had an issue with screens not loading.

This also happened a couple times when I skipped to the timeline and the first screen didn't load the background image so didn't "see" the timeline, but could jump to the back/forward options and move along the timeline and as soon as I did that the background picture (ie. the actual timeline) came up fine. Almost like the blu ray needed a refresh button, like a website.

Going to try hooking it directly to the TV and take the HDMI switching from the receiver out of the equation. the older TV definitely has trouble locking onto and displaying the different menu screens when switching between them, but that's a sync problem. The main issue I described seems like a disc load or display error.

Oh, and the Post Informer didn't seem to get delivered to my blu ray like it said on the Archives website.

I purchased the CD set yesterday and most of the discs were wedged so far inside the sleeve, or stuck to the glue, that when I took them out (as carefully as I could!) they each had a little mark on them. Disc 8 has a very big mark on it but fortunately I was able to rip all the files. I don't want a refund/exchange and I don't expect AG to do anything, but I just want it to be known that there's more than one person with this problem. I don't know why Neil likes these sleeves (maybe they remind him of LPs?) but I think most people would much prefer jewel cases or digipaks. Other than that the discs sound fantastic!

Picked up NYA1 at Borders for $199 (DVD) yestersay and just wanted to say its fantastic........sound quality is exceptional even through my old Kenwood amp and Advent Legacy speakers purchased in late 80's (I cant afford a whole new set up for Blu-Ray --TV, amp, PS3 etc). Want to thank AG for all his help given to Neil's fan. JTTP was fantastic for a first time viewer of the movie ---I know how most of my free time will be spent this summer. If you are feeling the pressure of the recession, you don't need to upgrade your whole system --get the DVD and you will not be disappointed. Thanks again Thrasher for all the info given on this site.

Hello,

Not ignoring your questions yesterday, just busy.
Today will be similar.

Topic 1- MP3 downloads. This is being worked on and hopefully the download page will be live soon.

What I find interesting about the reaction to all of this is that people have in their hands a beautiful box set with high res audio and instead of enjoying it and getting immersed, as it was meant to be heard, all they can focus on is that they can't IMMEDIATELY gain access to something as crappy as MP3s.
Remember that the MP3 files were an afterthought, something as a free, bonus. Neil himself has said thy are free with the set because they aren't really worth anything.
If you bought a box of cereal that had a free mp3 download in it, opened the box to find that that freebie wasn't IMMEDIATELY available, would it destroy your world? Especially f you had been told that it would be valid soon?

Be patient people, relax, listen to some Archives music, look at the book for a minute or two. This will all be resolved soon.

Yesterday was like my Birthday, Christmas, 4th of July, etc., all rolled into one!!!

I received my DVD set from Warners, and I purchased the CD set from a local store. I paid a lot of money for "Rush" shipment for the DVD set, and that is why I believe I received it on THE DAY!

I told my family that I would see them in "about 3 weeks"!!!

Like a child on Christmas morning, all I could do was just stare at the boxes, and gleefully exclaim, "Where do I begin?"

So I began at the beginning with the first CD. I really enjoyed reading along with the booklet.

The sound quality of the CD was greater than anything I had ever heard before. I can't wait till I'm able to get the Blu-Ray set and get the full audio! WOW!!!!

I sure love Neil, and am so grateful that he just gave all of this to enjoy!

All I can say is a big "Thank You" to Neil and the entire Archives Team for their labor of love. For the first time, I have enough to satisfy me "for a while."

Yes, it was worth the wait!!!!!

I also want to extend a big "Thank You" to Thrasher for making the waiting bearable. I really LOVED the "Hell Freezes Over" countdown!

I'm also looking forward to finally getting to see "Don't Be Denied" tonight on my PBS station (8PM, Channel 13, for the NYC area).

Also looking forward to Jonathan's Demme's "Neil Young Trunk Show," and then Volume 2 of the Archives(if there isn't a new CD from Neil first)!!!!!

So much to be thankful for!

Marian M.

There is only one BD-Live download available right now.
Those extra blue pins that you saw temporarily over the weekend (before release date) were part of our testing and shakedown as we prepped for June 2nd.

More BD-Live will be coming....fret not.

i just want to go on record that i have not once complained about the mp3's not being available yet and i was the one who bitched the loudest about needing to have my NYAIP (neil young archives ipod). and god knows i am like a little girl who couldn't wait most of the time. but i will wait. and so will we all, of course, we have no choice.

but AG, i think that everyone IS overwhelmed, and everyone i know who has received this AMAZING box wants nothing more than to retreat from life and sit in a dark room with it forever. i personally have a sore neck from sleeping with it under my pillow last night. BUT. people have to go out, to work, etc., and want to take the archives with them, crappy mp3 version or not. i think that is what you are hearing, not really complaining so much but a desire to have it with them wherever they go, starting RIGHT NOW. you know? there's no one here (including NYAIP me) who would prefer to have it that way. i think i can safely say that we would ALL prefer to be in a dark room with this box forever. but short of that, we want to take it with us. that's all. did i say the same thing enough times? you know what i mean.

we are all delighted, thrilled, overwhelmed, eager, enthusiastic, in awe, amazed. it's a very very big day/time for you guys, and congrats, and for ny, but it is also a big day for us. we're very excited! if we didn't care, we wouldn't care. ya know?

Hi AG,

Was at my friends last night watching the Archives. He has a Sharp Aquos Blu-Ray that he bought less than a year ago and it wouldn't load the 'Play All', 'Song Selection' etc tabs on the main menu. This happened on multiple discs. The BG image was there and when we figured out that the tabs were 'invisible' we managed to navigate around but I know we should be able to see these tabs for easier navigation. He checked the Sharp site for Firmware updates and it says there are no new ones for his player. Any ideas?

Just a couple of comments;
1.) When are we going to see Volume Two!!!!!!! How long must we wait, I am a consumer, I need more stuff NOW - can't anyone else see that purchasing Volume One was the important part, enjoying the music and book is secondary or tertiary. I must have the next set NOW. FEED ME!!!!!!

2.) The book in Volume One is one of the finest insights into the music and to some degree, the man and his perspective. A voyeurs glimpse of how the music got to the place it is today. Exceptional.

3.) Big thanks to the entire team that assembled this set, it is overwhelming in most regards, the level of detail, the artwork involved, everything...

4.) The Wings will bounce back in game four, no question!

All the pads have the writing on it, it is a reproduction of a note that Neil wrote on the Whisky a Go Go pad back when the Buffalo played a residency there, I believe. You can see the original in the Archives memorabilia section.

Archives Guy,

First, thanks to you and Neil, this set is awesome. I went for the Blu-Ray and it is incredible!

I know alot of posts have been complaints about MP3's, etc which I find hilarious since this is such high-quality stuff, why play MP3s? But anyway I have a technical question which I understand is what you are here for. I posted this last night but I am afraid you may have missed it. Short version: I get no bass through the subwoofer using component audio hookup, I get bass using optical but you taught me through this forum that component is way better quality so that is what I want! I know I have the speaker settings correct (speakers = small, subwoofer = yes) on the receiver and the Blu-Ray player (brand new Samsung 3600). When I use the speaker test feature I do hear some sound through the subwoofer at the proper time but it is WAY too low and way lower than all the other speakers. And yes I have the volume on the subwoofer (the physical knob itself) turned all the way up.

Please help!

Thank you

Doug Allentown

Mr. Allentown,

Hi AG,

Re: SHARP AQUOS player.

Not sure what kind it is, sorry but I know it is less than a year old. I'll get my friend to check on type, however I know there is no ethernet port. He has to download his updates with a flash drive and install from that. It was weird. Everything worked quite well except that the tabs at the bottom of the Main Menus weren't showing at all on at least 3 of the discs. They did show on one of the Topanga discs though...

Jeez, Warner Brothers is killing me!
What a tease.
Got the Blu-ray box today, and there are 16 pages missing from the book, while another 16 pages are repeated. I don't even have a Blu-ray player, so this is the only part of the package I can enjoy, besides the MP3 card.
Perhaps the worst part is that I have to send the whole package back (including the Squires single, which I can also play!)for a replacement! Opting for rush shipping has proved to be worthless!
Also must note that I stood there and watched (just to ease my mind) while a friend who owns a local record store placed his order for the Blu-ray, DVD, and CD versions two months ago...only to be informed by him last Friday that Warner Brothers had erroneously cancelled his order, oversold the thing, and would not be sending him any copies.
While I'm bummed, he is livid!

Harvest -
http://www.amazon.ca/Harvest-Rm-Neil-Young/dp/B001VZY4LY/ref=pd_bxgy_m_img_b

They are all there, just click around.

My other question in regards to these releases (apologies if this has been asked before):
Will the Blu-Ray remasters of these albums be in the same Archives format, with hidden features and video clips different than the ones on the Archives? In other words, is there any reason to go with the Blu-Ray over the CD (sound quality aside)? On that note, will the Blu-Ray versions come with digital downloads of songs not on the Archives? (The Losing End, Out on the Weekend etc.)

Thanks so much AG, sorry to bombard you with even more questions from curious fans.

I'm sorry to say that this player will not perform well with the Archives set. Don't know if you have been following the threads over the past few months but one pretty much needs to have a newer, Profile 2.0 player to be successful.

I just got the free download with my Blu-Ray set, and I HATE to be the complainer, but....are you serious? The tagging is HORRIBLE (i.e., when I throw it into iTunes, it doesn't even have a artist name, not to mention no album names (i.e. disc 0, 1, etc)) and best of all IT DOESN'T EVEN HAVE ALL THE SONGS! Is there some large mistake that will be fixed with these?!? They sound fine, but I really need all the songs and good tagging should be included too.

This is a huge mistake!

the price dropped $ 37 from what the price was when I ordered it.
Because mine didnt ship yet, they are giving me $ 37 refund ( I had to contact customer service). So if you ordered from Amazon at $ 275 or higher and didnt receive it yet,you can get a refund on the price difference from the new price of $ 238.

Anyone have a link to buy the Blu-Ray on Amazon for $238? It's showing up at $279.99 for me.

Also, these two questions from the new FAQ seem to contradict each other - am I missing something?

Q- Do I need to be connected to the Internet to listen to BD-Live content I've already downloaded?

A- No internet needed after download. The files now live on your player's hard drive and can be accessed by inserting a NYA disc.

Q- On my PS3 when I unplug the ethernet cable, I can no longer access my BD Live download. It appears again after I re-connect the internet. Why does this happen?

A- You need to keep connected to the internet. This can be accomplished either via the Ethernet cable or in the case of the PS3 player, via wifi.
Our tech team relates the following:
The application isn't designed to cache information about BD-Live content locally, so if the player is disconnected the content will still be on the player, but it won't know what the current pin configuration is, and won't show the content in the User Interface.
Once the player is connected again, the viewer will be able to see the content without needing to re-download it."

For GLUE issues:

Removing glue from CDs is simple and easy. If a klutz like me can do this, you can too.

Get a little isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) and a non-abrasive cloth. (Toilet paper is okay but do NOT use a paper towel.) Wet the cloth with the alcohol and rub the spot GENTLY, circular motion. In about 30 second the glue will come right off.

I did this to the 3 CDs that had a bit of glue. Glue is now gone and they play fine.

AG:

This may have been addressed, but honestly there are so many Archives threads now, that finding exact answers is tough.

I don't plan on buying the archives until later in the year (after I've upgraded my entire system), and I realize that the BD-live downloads will be available on the servers for as long as I can imagine.

However, I recall some comment about other items that would only be available "in the moment", not songs but other such items. Is this still the plan, or will everything associated with the NYA BD-Live downloads be available no matter how long I wait (gotta feed the family first).

there are no Hidden Tracks on the Timeline for any disc. Those white pins that you found are regular content on the disc.

Keep looking....it's really not that difficult and once you've found one you'll know how to find them all.

Are you ignoring my question? I have asked a couple of times why I only am getting bass using optical input into my receiver but not when I use component audio. That's right there is little to no sound coming from my subwoofer unless I use optical connection which you said is not as good as component (I don't have HDMI except for the video).

I really want to get this right and I just bought the Samsung 3600 yesterday so I could play Archives! Please help!

I'm having all sorts of issues with my PS3 and Onkyo TX-SR705. My PS3 is connected via HDMI to the receiver. I can verify on the PS3 display menu that I'm sending out a 24/192 signal. The reciever typically defaults to multichannel for my BDs, which in turn passes through to whatever signal is being passed over. So a DTS-HD Master is actually output in DTS-HD Master. Likewise with Archives, it defaults to 2-channel stereo linear PCM in 192kHz. Everything sounds great...once the song starts.

However, when using the file cabinet and listening to tracks on Archives, the reciever takes a few seconds in between each song to determine what type of signal is being sent over, which results in a loud clicking noise as it shifts from 2-channel stereo - reading next track info - back to 2-channel stereo. The same thing happens if I'm listen to a song and then select a video clip.

Highly irratating and it ruins the 'album' feel. I'm hoping I can tweak a setting to force a 2-channel stereo setting all the time.

Also, I've run into at least one instance on Disk 0 and 1 respectively where I've gone from listening to a track via the file cabinet (and playing around in the menus) but when that song ends and I go to the next song using the on screen arrow, I get 'HDMI-no signal' showing up on the receiver and no sound. The only way to get audio for that song is to back all the way out to the main menu and to start over, selecting it directly from the file cabinet. Again, not all the time, but occasionaly.

Non-important footnote: Why the lack of consistency in not having the main menu's audio in 192kHz?

AG- One minor correction to your FAQ. 1/2 of the BD disks are single layer and 1/2 are dual layer.
The Duals are all 3 Topangas, Massey Hall and North Country. I can't for the life of me figure out why Topanga2 needed to be Dual Layer....From a content perspective it seems pretty similar in scope to Disk0 and Disk1...not massive amounts of video...unless I am missing something big and fun:-)

Doug Allentown-

Sorry I lost your question in the long string.

Hmm....doesn't make a lot of sense. there has to be something about how your system is wired/set up that is causing this. Without being there and looking at your receiver, cabling and speakers there isn't much I can do.

Is this a powered subwoofer?
If you play other source material such as a CD out of your Blu-ray player, does it also lack low end?

Are you using a home theater receiver with lots f different digital and analog in/outs?

My guess is that there is a plumbing issue here.

Strip-

Is this a Panasonic Blu-ray player? It is the only player that we've experienced a clicking with....and there is an easy solution.

Menu audio? A very astute question.
Two answers-
1- some of source material (such as outdoor ambience, street sounds) was not recorded at such a high sample rate as 192. To bump it up to 192 wouldn't have added any better sound and would have only wasted disc space due to a larger sound file.
2- the menus were created for DVD before we had BD, so there was no 192 for the sound designer to work with. Again, real estate was a consideration.

Good questions,as usual.
Topanga 1 just went over the edge size wise and needed a dual layer.

Andy Whitman

Everybody knows this is a scam

"Cough up the bucks,” Neil Young sings on his latest album Fork in the Road, which is exactly what you have to do to purchase his mammoth, 10-disc Archives Vol. 1 (1963-1972). The DVD version will set you back $200; the Blu-ray version $300. So much for free love, or free anything.
For more than 20 years, Young has promised that this music would eventually be made available. Like Bob Dylan and Van Morrison, he’s left entire albums in the vault, and has played dozens of tantalizing songs in concert that have never been released. Archives Vol. 1 (1963-1972) is the first in what promises to be a series of exhaustive (and perhaps exhausting) box sets that chronicles a musical legacy stretching back almost 50 years.

Longtime fans have been salivating at the prospect for a long, long time, but the payoff is disappointing. Billed as something of a multimedia breakthrough, the 10 discs here present good—and often great—music paired with sub-standard video content. Unreleased tracks? They’re here, although in disappointing quantity and quality.

Has any timeline for the next volume been given?

I know this first one has been a long time coming, and I don't want to seem overly greedy, but I think the next 10 years of his career are going to be soooooo innarestin and filled with an unbelievable amount of unreleased content.

Now that the format and technology has been defined and successfully implemented, I was wondering if there is a chance that part of the 20 year wait for the first box set was just waiting for this technology (BluRay, Sound, and Java) and that while waiting for the technology Bernstein and team were gathering and assembling the rest of the volumes.

Dear Archives Guy:
I ordered the Archives DVD set from Amazon and received it today. Unfortunately, disc 2 and disc 8 were CD's instead of DVD's. I have contacted Amazon to see what they will do to make this right. I noticed other people have had similar mix ups. Just wanted you to know there seems to be a quality control problem with these sets. I know you are not quality control, just my frustration needing a venting. I was very impressed with the overall package, and I hope Amazon will make it right for me. Thank you for all of your help, advice, and information regarding the Archives.
If Amazon will not help me, will I be able to order another DVD set through neilyoung.com? Many thanks.

I was able to figure out what settings I needed to change on my receiver in order to get rid of the 'clicking' noise when changing between songs when using the file cabinet.

There's an listening mode preset on my receiver for "Multichannel PCM" (it was set to multichannel but needed to be set to stereo) and there's a listening mode preset for "Analog/PCM" which was already set to stereo.

From what signals were displayed on the receiver, the menu's on Archives are coming over as Multichannel PCM but the tracks are just PCM. Anytime the receiver switched between the two sound fields, I would hear an audible click. Now that I have them both defaulted to the same settings, the problem is gone. WHEW!

Thanks!

Strip,
Thanks a bunch - I've been using my PS3 and Onkyo receiver for a year now and suffered from the same issue - it's not limited to the Archives. I'll need to follow your advice (not tonight though).

Archives Guy, I hope you realize that much of the pining for additional stuff on the forums is just a reflection of how the envelope of people's expectations of things that can be offered and delivered by media such as the Archives have been expanded. The needs of people are limitless, and now that we've seen the stuff we can get, there's no end to the things we hunger for.

The choice of 320kpbs for the MP3s is great. At home I've spent and will spend hours delving into the blu-rays and their highdef sound, but I'll use the downloads to burn CD's for my car, and to take some of the stuff up to the Arctic Circle on my iPhone next week (there's no way I'll be able to get through it all before then). I guess asking for FLAC / Apple Lossless is pushing it, but consider this - I believe John Cougar Mellencamp provided high res files of the songs on his new CD with the CD itself. Neil and John could trade some ideas at the next Farm Aid...

Another question (I'm SURE this has been answered, but there are now so many threads) - does it matter which disc you insert into the PS3, or do you always get offered all the new downloads? I assume the latter - I wouldn't want to cycle all 10 discs just to see if there are new songs for that particular segment of the timeline.

Again, thanks for this incredible set. It's slightly embarassing - I came home at lunch yesterday at the pretense of picking up sushi for my coworkers to check if the set had arrived. Today I took it to work, closed to door, and fiddled with it (no blu-ray at work).

Yuk!
As Neil might sing, "Why do i keep fucking up!"

This box set was obviously rushed to production, and major quality control issues exist.

1. The packaging is a nightmare, and people have no idea what they order is what they'll get.

2. The packaging is complex, and in extreme cases might be damaged with all the moving parts.

3. The MP3's aren't ready - how can this be?

4. Here's the worst part - with so much technology in play, there's no guarantee that your system can consistently play the BluRays. All i'm reading about is glitch after glitch after glitch.

This, my friends, is a perfect storm of NIGHTMARES! If you're paying $300-plus this should never be the case. Never.

I am simply going to sit back, wait for all the dust to settle (ie, better quality control, lower prices) before i dip into the deep end.

Cough Up The Bucks!

From the Onkyo receiver on-screen menu, go to #5 Listening Mode Preset, then change the defaults for the Multichannel PCM and Analog/PCM settings as I mentioned before.

I haven't watched anything other than Archives since I've made that change, but I have a feeling I'll have to change those settings each time I switch b/w Archives and blu-ray movies to avoid the problem.

There's also a great FAQ for the Onkyo at AVSForum. Check out Owner topic #21 for more info on setting the DSPs.
