Don't see this track listed as being on Fork in the Road. Anyone know more? I like the song...

Well I'm getting a chance to post before the sycophants clog the pipes, so I'm going to make this one worth it.

Like Dylan once said, even when Neil's terrible, the melody is his saving grace. But I don't think even the melody can offset the abysmal lyrics of this song, which I'm tempted to call not just uninspired, but simply empty.

The emotional vibe Neil usually gives in his songs (that is, there usually is one), has progressively faded since Prairie Wind, and I think Fork in the Road has finally seen a good portion of his new material completely emptied of those feelings.

I loved Greendale, you could feel Neil putting his all into that story, Prairie Wind had the whispers of death and fear that made many of the songs so powerful. Living With War had the sadness and anger to offset its musical simplicity and lyrical stretches. Even Chrome Dreams II had a fiery spark or two of feeling left (Spirit Road, The Way).

Every song I've heard from Fork in the Road feels dead. There's nothing there. I've tried listening to many of these songs multiple times, trying to find what I may be missing, and yet each time I feel more and more that there is nothing to find.

I can't offer up explanation, only observation. I hate playing critic to someone's art, but to see someone like Neil, who has been everywhere from rockabilly to synthesizers, lose touch with the beauty of his own art is saddening.

i really wish this song and Sea Change were gonna be on the album. i'm really confused. light a candle and this song are classic neil. seems like the last few albums, neil is able crank out a couple of classics, surrounded by dreck:(...
seriously, what's the deal with this song not being on the album?

I really like the song "Get around" a lot, its kind of gentle. Thanks for the video! Fun to see Neil riding along in the LV.
Too bad, this song isn't on FITR.

… I can't offer up explanation …

I think I can. It's in the ear of the beholder.

I remember when RE-AC-TOR came out I thought: this is terrible: RA-PID TRANS-IT, T-BONE, and also OPERA STAR with it's stupid 'who-ho-ho-ho-ho-ho' It just lacked evrything I wanted from Neil. Computerized Handclaps, a very compressed guitar sound, lack of melody and the lyrics… Ain't got no T-Bone, got mashed potatoes. Phew.
Many years later, as I listened back to it, I realized half of the songs are just Neil as you would want him to be: 'Surfer Joe' is the epic guitar rocker,
'Get back on it' is country rock much like 'Are you ready for the country', 'Motor City' could be replaced by 'White line' from Ragged Glory, 'Southern Pacific' not a bad country rock song that should fit on many album. Not to mention 'shots'…

So what was wrong with it? There's more albums of Neil that have a couple of songs that are not my favorites…
Time Fades Away had some rockers that lacked melody, Neils harsh voice is far from subtle there,
'Drive Back' from Zuma was a bit monotone to my ears.
I just couldn't relate to the 'stupidity' of some songs. The repetetiveness of especially RAPID TRANSIT and T-BONE.

They're still not my favourites. But as I learned the background of that whole album (years later) I at least could understand. It was just Neil and what he was going trough.

This is Neil and what he's been up to lately, like it or not. There are a couple of songs that are different, monotone. But there are also beautiful melodies and great guitar sound.I hear blue notes, greendale, and OK, i also hear Crazy Horse. But they're waiting in the room next door…

Well I have to say the album is sub-par. There a few good tunes the rest are weak. Infact the few good tunes would be bottom dwellers on a good NY album. Heck I even liked landing on water when it came out but this... Hey maybe I will listen to this again a few years down the road and change my mind but this is the first album of his that I will not purchase. Sorry Neil, I guess you are human after all.

I - almost - agree with Veg - good posting, man. Sure, the songs on FITR seem to be, by all reasonable measures, a bunch of stupid throw-aways. Now, "Quick and dirty" has always been Neil's MOA, and, well, sometimes it works out just great (Tonight's the Night), sometimes it sucks (Ev'ry'bo'd'ý's ro'ckin') and sometimes you just don't know what to make of it. That goes for FITR, which is stupid to the point of being hilarious - the videos have kept me smiling for days. As far as the songs go: nice for a beerdrinkers party, but nothing to listen to when you're looking for some kind of feeling. It's like Neil, with age, has gotten tired of music for its own sake, and is more interested in making a sound track for Sixty Minutes, of the next Michael Moore movie. That's fine by me - but judge it for what it is: a soundtrack. Or a joke.

Hey guys. What can I say.... I LIKE the song. Who else besides maybe Radiohead can attempt 3 or 4 concept albums in a decade. In a few years when Neil is either not producing new material or worse yet, WE outlive him...you will look back on the artistry of this period from Prarie Wind through Fork in the Road and probably re-evaluate. Name the other artists who are tackling subjects like enviroment, consumerism, freedom, government and corporate corruption and ALSO tackling the issues of the heart we all face. I saw this as a love song to Peggy, he's focused on Linc-Volt but he's still running around with her. Neil please keep pumping out what ya got even if others call it crap. I'm buying your POS, I don't often purchase anything by anyone else these days.

Its a shame Neil's later work is not holding up very well. It happens to a lot of artists and only a few keep the artistic flame alive. Dylan's later work is a bit patchy in places, but he's released some fantastic tunes. Not Dark Yet would have to be one of the best songs about aging that's ever been made. And our own criminally neglected Paul Kelly's later work is just as great as his earlier stuff. And he writes lyrics of substance and has gone through various musical changes and made them work - unlike Neil. The same can be said of Dylan. You may not have liked his gospel stuff, but he said it convincingly, and again not like Neil.He should stop making ridiculous concept albums that he can't pull off. Anyway, what's Neil got to say? He's writing bland songs about politics and cars. I love Neil, but his artistic fire has unquestionably dimmed. It will perhaps take a great personal upheaval to make him produce good music again.

Veg, its nice to see someone (you) who can write a negative review that seems thoughtful and balanced ... too many times it feels like someone trying to express their negativity ... yours comes off as sincere and that's a breath of fresh air... compare that to the one written by 'Piece of Crap' ... after reading his comment I understood why he signs it piece of crap ... anyhow, the only video I've watched is FITR and I thought it was brilliant ... For me, Neil sums it all up by the song and video, he captures the times in a way no one else can ... the video is hilarious ... do I think I'll be listening to it 25 years from now the way I listen to TTN or EKTIN? I'm not sure, maybe not ... but my faith is not shaken ... The muse is as alive as ever

I just don't understand some comments. I just don't get it.I just watched the new video on "pog" and it's beautiful. Close your eyes and listen. Like an album on the turntable. This reminds me of "On the beach". You have to dig the "electric band". There excellent musicians. This is whats great about Neil, change. Don't worry, the Horse will be here soon enough.
..until next time. Peace.

One of the above Anonymi holds me to my blog name for my comment on FITR, thank you. But he almost quotes me in saying the video of FIRT is "hilarious". Well, that's the point I was making: there's a lot of weird fun in these videos, but still, I agree with Veg that many of the songs sound empty. The comparison of Get Around to Will to Love made me grab for American Stars n Bars, and guess what: that still IS a great song. I almost forgot Get Around while listening to it. But ok, let's bury the axes & wait for the whole enchilada to come out next week and see. Be a lot of fun, anyway.

This album is for Rust Buckets only. I would be embarrased to play it to anyone not plugged into the rust matrix. I have listened to if a few times and I do not mind it. Its ok, It could have been much better but this is the way the man wanted it and who am I to argue with th man. The wife is tolerant to Neils sound but I wouldn't put her through the pain of listening to this on a road trip. Its too rushed, Him and the muse seem out of step. I think muse wanted nothing to do with this and left him high and dry.

p.s. I'm 46 years old now. When I was about 14, I discovered Neil. Around the time he released Zuma, Decade.
Really, I never would have thought he would write a tune with the same feeling as 'Will to love'. But he did right now. I just don't understand anyone who says the socalled 'muse' has left him.
I'm really sorry, but it might be YOU the muse has left behind.

It's a beautiful tune.
Hope it will be on the Blu-Ray version of FITR.

I think what we are looking at is Neil pruning one of the best songs off the album in order to attract a bigger audience for the Blu-Ray edition and its higher sound quality. :) If so, kinda nutty... but a just cause. But what will REALLY be fascinating is if "Get Around" is a regular part of the Blu-Ray edition's performance film, as if it's on the album (and maybe Neil feels anything other than vinyl or 192/24 digital is not the real album, anyway!).

After all the carrying on about FITR, I listened to the live stream of most of it last night. It's fun. It's good. It makes you smile, like "Living with War" makes you cry

And "Get Around" is terrific. Hope we get it in some form

Cheers

Ya know, this album has really hit a very raw nerve with both his 'optimal' fans AND his 'optional' fans...soughta like... "HE loves me", 'he loves me not', 'he loves me' , 'he loves me not'... I don't think I read as much diverse ,negative, positive. unsure, the jury's out, comments on the impending release of such an album!.....AND NEIL WOULD BE LUVIN THIS!..and do ya think he'd give a stuff..Nah!
