Kingston, Ontario, Canada Concert Reviews of Neil Young: 4/13/09

Hey Thrasher,

What a concert last night- I got to see Neil in my home town – what a treat. The concert was fantastic. I have seen him many times since 1986 (including Massey Hall) but there was something extra special about last night. It all started on Sunday night when at a bar in Kingston “The Mansion”, Rocky Roberts performed in “The Living Room” with Rick Rosas, Anthony Crawford and Pegi Young. He also had some local acts including Sara Harmer and The Abrahams Brothers on stage with him. What a great time! And yes I got to meet Pegi and Anthony. A local radio station has me as their “Neil Correspondent”. I’ve attached the link to the interview they did with me before the concert.

http://www.fm96.ca/home/tabid/1236/Default.aspx

But man, Neil was on – I have heard Cortez many, many times in the past, but last night Old Black was singing the notes like I have never heard before. And before he sang Old Man Neil sent out an “I love you” to his family in the audience (you may remember Scott Young past away while living in Kingston a few years ago). Two encores, with a version of Rockin’ in The Free World that had the whole arena rockin’.

Neil really created a connection last night. If you get a chance to see Neil on this tour, do it.

I send a couple of pictures from our digital camera that we took last night and one with Anthony and me and some of the Rocky Roberts concert. Here is a bit of an article from the local paper http://www.thewhig.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=1522622

Take Care,

Brad

Thanks Brad!! Good to know that Neil rocked his old man's hometown!

From Crowd roars at Young show - The Whig Standard - Ontario, CA by GREG BURLIUK:
On the title song of his new CD Fork in The Road,Neil Young jokes about having a pot belly and how his record sales have tanked, the implication being that he's a has-been.

Try telling that to the 6,500 fans who jammed the K-Rock centre last night to greet the legendary Canadian rocker with a massive wave of affection.

Thanks Karen!

Neil Young will be performing tonight at K-Rock Centre, Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

same shit different night! hes not changing it up that much. watchtower & rockin in the free world were the encore.i thought old shaky was going to EXPLODE at the end. lol. the fork stuff didnt get a big response. would have been nice to have some kinda version of ordinary people instead. a goodly amount of weed burnin around sec 112. two people were carryed off the floor totally out of it, only a few songs in. the brown acid i guess? anyways it was a good night, not great. 8 out of 10. 10 out of 10 if you consider his age. lol. 5th time seeing him.

glad to hear the show was good... but i'm getting pretty worried for london tomorrow! was very VERY excited to see the Tonight's the Night songs, as well as Words... the fact that he seems to have ditched all 5 of these hurts pretty bad! Pocahontas helps a bit, but...

the reviewer said it was a 90min show. she must have left before the encore. neil came on at 9pm sharp, played 90min, then the great encore going till 1050pm. so thats 1hr 50min.

The set list seems to be heading in wrong direction - IMHO. The first 3 nights looked great. Now it seems to be reverting back to ... well ... not great.

2 Hours of Neil is 2 hours of Neil. Stop looking at the song lists and wishing for that something. Be surprised. Internet has taken away the mystic of the concert night. Too much info. Bring on London Ontario and let the distortion Rock Neil!!

Amazing show. TTN stuff would have been cool but whatever...

Definite highlight was seeing the old Rust Never Sleeps keyboard being lowered to the stage right before Like a Hurricane. Inaresting version of Pocahontas too!!

Rock on.

well it's true, internet sort of blew away this surprise thing about going to a concert without knowing what the hell the songs where going to be...But when you know that last week he has played all those great obscure songs like Goin' back, change your mind, speakin out, Albuqueruqe and the such,...it's kind of dispaointing to hear Johnny Magic...
Well, Neil is neil and we all know about that...

So, Neil walked on stage and the wave of love pouring out towards him were palpable to say the least. Strongly felt love. He didn't say much between songs, except for the dedication of "old man" to his family there.
He said most of what he wanted to say through the music. Did anyone notice that all the songs he chose have to do with impermanence? wish he will live many many more years. he should take better care of his health -- that pot belly is like a tire around him and he's never looked so heavy. I'm worried that it had the feeling of a farewell tour. Come on Neil -- stick around a lot longer. We love you, man. Give more commentary on the state of the world! wayne

Yep, another great night with Neil who will not disappoint. Neil has become a better guitarist over the last few years - albeit he will drag the endings out a bit. His solo lines are creative and very few "attack" a guitar the way Neil does. This show was a great show for Eastern Ontario fans who often have to travel a long way to see Neil. The audience sang the classics note for note and did not appear disappointed in the least. Left wanting a little more, but what I did get was pure "in yer face" Neil that left a mark!

Murf at John Lees with the imitators.

Another interesting fact was the variety of age groups you will see at a Neil show - from teens to canes, they all want to see Neil.

Well, I actually went to work today - talk about not being focused. I'm glad I'm not a surgeon. Neil tunes running through my brain all day.

Last nights concert was great. His sound is phenomenal. The last chord of Like a Hurricane bellowed out like lava in the darkness. I was close enough to see the grin on his face when he played it, he loved it and he knew he was on.
Nobody loves better the -acoustic/lyrical/harmonica- Neil than I but in the middle of his solos last night there was a master of - unleashed organic distortion guided by command-sound that graced the stage and engaged the people. Mesmerizing!

I didn’t blink for two hours and in a blink it was over. Until next time… thanks from Kingston.

Ont. Canada

(Don’t need no set list!)

Amazed at the Cortez / Cinnamon Girl, one-two punch. Exquisite!
We were rocking all over the reception area and screaming our accolades. Those chords, that attack, that voice. I was so happy to have experienced the small arena sound. Fabulous Kingston show! Pete from Ottawa

At 4/15/2009 02:46:00 PM, Anonymous Pat from Ottawa said...

From centre-stage and about ten paces back from the rail, it all sounded good. I'm glad I didn't look at setlists in advance because I would have been sorry to have missed out on Words. But Cortez and Pocohontas were there and were pure magic.

I found the volume to be not as loud as it was at the December concert in Ottawa where we were in the same location on the floor, but then again, I don't think I've heard anything as loud as when Neil played A Day in the Life as the encore. With slightly less volume, I was able to enjoy the butter from Old Black even more than in the past.

Kingston was about the 10th time I've seen him in at least five different cities, and if I didn't have work and kids that need my attention, I'd be on the road to London to see him tonight.

Thank you Neil for the music and thanks to all my fellow fans who make his concerts such a great experience.

Just saw Neil in London Apr 15. The show was about 2.5 hrs long and just awesome! Neil f****** rocks!

Here's my attempt to come up with the setlist (sorry couldn't figure out how to post to the London show link). I don't know the potential new tunes yet so I marked them as "? new one??". Knew a lot of the old ones though, and the surprises at this show and the noticeable variations from the previous ones are:

new tunes not played yet:
Out on the weekend
Down by the river

sorry he didn't play these:
Cortez The Killer
World on A String
Mr. Soul

So here's my attempt at what he did play, sorry I know I'm missing some, likely a new one or one I wasn't familiar with:

When You Dance, I Can Really Love
Hey Hey My My
Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
Spirit Road
Words
Out on the weekend
Cinnamon Girl
Pocahontas
Mother Earth
Needle & Damage Done
Heart of Gold
Old Man
Ready for the Country
Speakin' Out
? new one??
Tonight's the Night
Change Your Mind
? new one??
Albuquerque
? new one??
Down by the river
? new one??

All Along the Watchtower (Encore)

Cheers!
