"Fork In the Road" - New Video!

"Fork In the Road" Video

A fresh Neil Young track with a story and a swingin' beat- Fork In The Road...a sneak preview from the forthcoming album.

Thanks AG, Luc & ShakeyPix1!

At 3:30, we hear:

"Keep on bloggin'
`Til the power goes out
The batteries dead
Twist and shout"

OK, we're bloggin' Neil, we're bloggin'!

For the doubters and denialists, take a bite of that apple! Keep on crankin' Neil!

When this video came through, it was accompanied with the message "Feel free to embed, download and take mobile."

And for those who wanted to take the stay the course fork and were afraid of change, all we say is that we took the fork of change. And that's change we can believe in.

From Neil Young Debuts Hilarious Clip for New “Fork in the Road” : Rolling Stone : Rock and Roll Daily (Thanks PunkDavid!):
"Near the end he plays some mean air guitar while a flat screen TV is repossessed in the background. A spokesman for Young confirms the song is the title track to a forthcoming studio album. What does that mean for the perpetually delayed Archives box set that was due out in March, and the Crazy Horse album Toast? “It seem logical in light of the timeliness of the subject matter that it will preempt Archives and Toast for the time being,” the spokesperson says. “But that hasn’t been confirmed yet.” With Neil Young, very few things ever are."

Hmm, didn't we say that last week?

From Uncut.co.uk by John Mulvey:
"It is, then, a ramshackle roadhouse chugger pitched somewhere between Canned Heat, “Roadrunner” and some weird downhome Velvets, with Young intoning the not-tremendously profound lyrics in a droll, comparatively deep register. The opening lines seem to be, interestingly, “Got a pot belly, it’s not too big/ It gets in my way, when I’m driving my rig.”

“Fork In The Road” is kind of fun, though it might alarm a good few Neil fans when heard in conjunction with those other new songs – live versions are all over the internet, if you’re interested. It’s certainly alarmed plenty of our friends over at Thrasher’s Wheat, whose consternation has been collated into a useful article on Young’s latest diversion there.

I can see a lot of their points, not least that this seems notably rudimentary, facile stuff even for someone like Young who has made such a virtue of simplicity. What I find amusing, though, is that what “Fork In The Road” and the other Linc-Volt songs seem to represent, in a way, is a kind of gold standard for a lot of rock fans. I often whinge a little here about the doomed and wrong-headed pursuit in certain critical/fannish circles for an idea of authenticity in music, for a direct and unmediated expression of the artist’s passionate creative spark."

(Thanks John!)

Neil blogs the official lyrics of "Fork In the Road" by "Joe the Rock Star":

Got a pot belly.
It's not too big.
Gets in my way
When I'm driving my rig.

Driving this country
In a big old rig,
Things I see
Mean a lot

Friend has a pickup.
Drives his kid to school.
Then he takes his wife
To beauty school.

Now she's doin’ nails.
Gonna get a job.
Got a good teacher.

There's a fork in the road ahead.
I don't which way I'm gonna turn.
There's a fork in the road ahead.

Forgot this year,
To salute the troops.
They’re all still there
In a fucking war.
It’s no good.
Whose idea was that?

I’ve got hope.
But you can’t eat hope.
I’m not done.
Not giving up.
Not cashing in.
Too late.

There’s a bailout coming but it’s not for me.
It’s for all those creeps watching tickers on TV.
There’s a bailout coming but it’s not for me.

I’m a big rock star.
My sales have tanked,
But I still got you.
Thanks!
Download this.
Sounds like shit.

Keep on bloggin’
‘Til the power goes out
And your battery’s dead.

Twist and Shout.
On the radio.
Those were the days.
Bring ‘em back.

There’s a bailout coming but it’s not for you
It’s for all those creeps hiding what they do
There’s a bailout coming but it’s not for you
Bailout coming but it’s not for you

Got my new flat screen.
Got it repo’d now.
They picked it up.
Left a hole in the wall.
Last Saturday.
Missed the Raiders game.

There’s a bailout coming but it’s not for you
There’s a bailout coming but it’s not for you
It’s for all those creeps hiding what they do

At this point, the video has gone viral to a degree.

The link to the video was posted as a comment on this blog on Monday night. By Tuesday, the major music magazines Uncut.co.uk and Rolling Stone had picked it up. In addition, to "Joe the Rock Star"'s post the video has been circulated among a number of music blogs.

Pure Neil Tradition, fuckin pain in the ass. Fucker's video.
Great, really funny, very close to the punk spirit of Neil. Could be bad for some of us, but it doesn't matter anyway.

First time hearing this, and I was expecting poop from Uncle Neil, but damn I was wrong, this, imho, is a fine tune.

Funny. But still boring. Neil is a poet, and this simplistic stuff is crap compared to his great work, like Cortez the Killer, Ordinary People, Thrasher, Don't Let it Bring You Down, etc...

Those songs actually influence the way I see the world with their beautiful imagery and carefully constructed musical backdrops/accompaniments, which ebb and flow with the lyrics.

This new song does nothing really, except have a funny video.

Now, it's time for a joke.

I love jokes mate. But if all the songs on Neil's new album are like this it'll be a joke too far!

Yeah, you're right, but it could also be a big big joke in the "music industry". Know the thing ?

I hope so! I mean, I buy and listen to everything our man releases, and usually grow to love it over time. But expectations are so high for the Archives that if they're going to be delayed again it should be for something genius, not another album of throwaway songs. Imho, etc etc...

Well, well, well. I understand that I'm totally wrong not complaining about the new songs, but the fact is I like them. Of course they're not Down by the River, Like a Hurricane, Powderfinger or Words - but they make me feel good. Yes. In good mood. I have been listening to the 11 new songs in my car for two whole days, and I still want to play it again. I think some of these songs will be good concert numbers.

You know, a real Percival fan has to be very patient. Sometimes it's the Holy Grail, sometimes it's a true shit, and sometimes it's a good fucker's joke, just like that. Sooner or later we'll have another great album, with the Horse. Right now, Neil is taking us for fools. He's a good fucker, but that's why we love the Man.

Yes its a piece of crap, A bunch of of drunkards could have jammed this out in one take... but this is pure Neil, This is Neils sound. Its perfect for the occasion. He is a man of timing. I love it.

Yes, gotta love Neil. He does what he wants, when he wants to do it & to hell with the audience and their expectations. That is a true artist. Seriously.

But his eternal mind-fucks through the media are tough to take. Just think about the last couple of years: The Archives are coming out on DVD in 2007 and here’s a trailer…now 2008, enjoy the same trailer…now 2009?, no trailer just a still page with no date? Here comes Chrome Dreams II with Ordinary People on it…been waiting 20 years to release the song and the time right now is perfect…but won’t play it live on the album’s tour. There’s an album with Crazy Horse (the band that almost all die-hards want to see him perform with) called Toast that was recorded back in 2001…let’s talk about it in the press & then release it! When? God knows. Oh, and here’s almost a dozen songs that were written in about 5 minutes…and the name of the new album, according to Rolling Stone, will be Fork In The Road (the only one of the “new” songs NOT performed on the latest tour)!

Gotta love his spirit though. He’s constantly doing something new and that’s never going to change; that’s the only thing for certain. He’s not just some rocker that we pay our hard earned cash to so we can just be entertained. He owes his fans nothing. We’re the ones who seek him out time & time again through good times & bad to see the craziness or genius he has to offer us. Mostly great, some so-so & some pretty, pretty bad.

Oh Neil, how could have I ever doubted you? I, like many others, originally thought this song was an embarrassment. Now I realize that I had forgotten my sense of humor. Maybe this next release will be a comedy album - who would have seen that coming? Thanks, Neil, for always giving me a surprise.

I think the video and the song are hilarious. Its in the spirit of "Piece of Crap" or "Prisoners of Rock and Roll".

I wasn't crazy about a lot of the Greendale songs but there are a few gems there. Neils newer style seems be a lot looser with the lyrics. Its a style that I like sometimes and sometimes I don't at all.

I guess I just don't understand the
level of vitriol directed at Neil.
He's always done what he wants to do and write when the spirit moves him. That method has produced a lot of great songs and some not so great.

Anyway, I'm happy to hear an artist I like a lot keep creating new work.

Neil's new 'Fork in the Road' puts all the doubters to shame ... its as relevant as 'Ohio' and I don't say that lightly ... open up and see it for what it is ... 40 years later he's carrying the same torch and since he's doing it alone its more relevant than ever ... I'm sure in 10 years he'll come back around to doing a Harvest III album and it'll appease some of the critics, but 'Fork' is the coolest thing I've seen in a while bar none.

Thanks for the lyrics, Archives Guy. BTW, I love the song now. The snippet we heard before did not do this song justice at all.

I also want to say how ironic I think it is that when I first listened to Neil Young back in the 60's (Buffalo Springfield era), I had a cheapo portable transistor radio that sounded way, way worse than an iPod, so he's kind of pointing us back to a time when the sound was worse than it is now. I loved the music for the music; good songs are good songs no matter what the format is. And I do believe Fork In The Road is an example of a very good Neil Young song!

Love reading all of the posts. Just like Neil fans are red and blue staters, we have people who get it and others that don't. I think Neil just gave a shot over anyone's bow who do not care about how they listen to music. These lines give you the picture:

Download this
Sounds like shit

Then Neil goes to:

Keep on bloggin’
‘Til the power goes out
Your battery’s dead
Twist and shout

I think Neil actually was talking about people on sites like Thrasher's Wheat, that said that they just wanted the archives on CD so they could hear it. Neil has a keen ear and really wanted to put it on Blue Ray so the people who care about the sound could really hear it in the best way (Though, seeing Neil live is a good way to hear him- maybe in the living room at Talbot's home might be the best).

Thank you Archives Guy for the lyrics. Great, funny video that speaks of our time (# of albums selling by great performers, recession, bail out, another one of Neil's great shirts- it had it all). Great to hear L.A. Johnson is editing more videos.

why are people complaining about this? This is classic Neil, folks! A great, simple driving beat with a twisted solo at the end, and Neil's cranky old man lyrics- I'll gladly take a new album with tunes like this anyday!

This song has been stuck in my head for days. The video is great. Like others have said, I get the feeling some of these lines are a direct reply to all this online shit-talkin' goin' on about the Archives. "Archives Guy" has been doing covert research for Neil's songwriting. Who woulda guessed?

I like to see Neil is at least having a good time with this video. Can't wait for the new album.

The ipod earplugs plugged into the apple he's holding is hilarious ... this is no throw away song, in a way only Neil can do he's captured the times perfectly, and the video is priceless ...

On the Rolling Stone's web site, a Dude said :

" the archives can wait until neil stops making amazing, relevant music.. there’s plenty of time to dust off old tracks later, for now appreciate this living legend - he still has so much to say."

I think he is fucking right.

There's something about this video that you don't usually see in Neil, and that's a sense of fun. It's really enjoyable to see him have a laugh at himself, the music business, his fans, politics and the economy.

I love this video!

I don't care if he's taking the piss out of us all, maybe we deserve it and maybe we're big enough to laugh along with him as well.

It puts me in mind of the video to "Wonderin'" shot by Tim Pope and its somewhat irreverent attitude to Neil, that Neil palyed along with.

Funnily. Pope went on to shoot the video "Touch the Night" that was done in one shot as is "Fork in the Road".

Anyway, this is a side of Neil we should see more of.

Nice one Neil, you brightened up my day!

Pete

Neil Young, man,
He's been a media mogul since the start. Releases a new song via a YouTube format that my 10 year son would do. I think his humor and sarcastic take on things are as endearing and enduring as his music. The 'raps' on Canterbury House 40 years ago that accompany the songs are a long lost relative to this new release. Not all songs hit people the same. Seems he can leave room in most for us to decide what it says to us, not necessarily what it means to him. I don't see him as a preacher, as much as a protester, and willing to do what it might take to progress his agenda, both for his benefit and ours. Engine, cars and caboose make the journey together.

Now don't crash on that mountain pass, y'all.

It strikes me that this driving, monotonous bluesy beat is the same thing Dylan does on severel tracks on Modern Times. Its cool, but makes Dylan a bit boring from my point of view, but i think Neil does it with greater energy and sense of fun.

Espen asked:

In today's current events, "bailout" refers to the money that the government is spending to support the financial institutions that have lost their shirts in the collapse.

Or, as you would understand it better in communist Europe, "government as usual".

;-P

LATEST NEWS on "Fork In The Road"
First there was a soundclip on NY.com that most of his fans didn't like. Next came the YouTube video that got massive reviews all over the world. Shakey Pictures did put the YouTube video on NY.com and now they replaced it with a better version that almost sounds like a different mix!?! Maybe they did it because they can't control the YouTube compressing. Anyway, it sounds better and listen to the organ parts in the "new mix". Sounds great!

So, for the best version of Fork In The Road go to neilyoung.com and click on the television.

Ok, so it probably won't be among the classic tracks in Neils setlist in years to come, and it probably won't be a track you return to again and again, but its a classic NY throwaway song. Grumpy ole man playing grizzly ole guitar and having a pop at whats bugging him.

That's got to be a great song! First sounds like shit and a total joke, then really gets in your head. Made me laugh out loud and had a smile on my face for the whole day. Neil does it again coming out of leftfield and hitting it out of the park in the most unlikely way. It makes you stand up, take notice, wonder WTF and, with any luck, get it!

AAHHhhh...I think I am finally seeing the humor...Fitting the earbuds of his headfones in, only to see that he is plugged into an actual apple (lol)...you don't need no ipod to listen to music and the reference to sounding like crap (mp3 compressions), then biting the apple and tossing it. Great stuff! Lots more too.

dr dip's secret interview with neil during his recent australian tour;
d.d.So Neil, ya just finished ya "down under" tour with the Eclectic band and peg, how was it!
N.Y.Well,it was fun...loved doin the BDO shows, Melbourne and Brissie concerts were a blast...Sydney "ent cent" was pretty fucked though.
d.d. there's a lotta talk about the release of the long awaited archives set, whats really happenin' here?
N.Y. Fuuuck I'm over this question!
I'm fuckin'Neil for fucks sake and I'll do what I fucken please!!!
d.d. Ok, ok, sorry i asked!
d.d.just on this subject.Sounds like ya gunna have a lot of unreleased early stuuf with the Buffalo Springfield..looking forward to hearin this(for what its worth)he,he.
N.Y. leave the jokes to me dickwad!
d.d. sorry
d.d.Incidently where did the name of the band the buffalo springfield come from ?..I've read "shakey" and it doesn't really tell you much in this regard.
N.Y.look there's a lotta shit I didn't tell Jimmy about in the book even though he thinks he got the ins and outs of a monkey's arse!! I'll tell ya a little secret.
Back when I first got me ranch I used to go up ta Springfield with Stillsy shootin' buffalo for kicks
Stephen was all guns blazin',shootin' every thing that moved..which is pretty funny as they're usually just grazin'.
d.d. Whoa, so you used to shoot'm?
N.Y.Nah,I'd get all guilty and stuff and start quiverin down the gun barrel..thats when stills nicknamed me "Shakey"
d.d.inneresting
d.d. So, could these beasts kill ya?
N.Y. Only if ya choked on the bone!! (HE, he he!)
d.d. inneresting
d.d.So, back to the present.. you've got plenty of projects goin' on at present ie lincvolt, model trains etc..any other projects we haven't heard about?
N.Y. yeah,a few..but they're in the early stages and I don't wanna talk about these until "the Archives set is released.
d.d. inneresting!
d.d.So, "lincvolt".. its seems to be ya baby at the moment..is it true you think you'll be able to get 100miles to the gallon outa ya lincoln or are ya just jerkin everyone off.
N.Y. fuck off Dip.. I'm dead set.
d.d. ya talk about alternative fuel other then electricity.. whatya mean?
N.Y. Well, years ago when I was livin up near North Ontario, I used to go huntin and clubbin'baby harp seals for fun.. I had a few eskimo and indian mates, Poko hontas was an indian chick I used to hang out with and she introduced me to alot of her kin.
d.d. inneresting
d.d.did this have much influence on the songs you were writing at the time?
N.Y. yeah well, songs like helpless and broken arrow were a direct influence from when I was hangin' with Poka and her kin.
d.d. how so?
N.Y. well helpless was written after a big day clubbin' seals... I think thats how they woulda felt
he, he, he
d.d. inneresting
d.d. So, how does this tie into my question about alternative fuels?
N.Y. Well, after a good day clubbin' I used to always feel guilty and started shaken and years later I used to think about the other uses of these dead harp seals. Rassy had a good business makin harp seal vests for the boys outa the pelts..but I knew there was other uses. That's when I cottoned onto the idea of gettin the harp seal oil extracted from the carcasses for alternative fuel
with the correct proportion of seal oil mixed with pigshit I could get a fairly high octane out of it. I used to run the old hearse on it in the early years and always knew its potential
d.d. inneresting!
d.d. just one more question..i noticed at the concerts you had some guy paintin pictures on the stage just next to Peg..what's the story wit that?
N.Y. Yeah that guy was some obsessive fan that reckoned he got his motivation and influence to paint and be creative from listening to my music
d.d. inneresting
d.d. what did ya think of his finished works?
N.Y. They were a piece of crap.. but it kept him happy..I thought I'd at least appease some of my fans!!
d.d.inneresting
d.d just one more question, I noticed at the end of ya cover of the "day in the life of" you annihalated(sic) "old Blacks" Strings was that deliberate or did Larry fuck up.
N.Y.Nah..he, he. its not even "Old Black". Ya think I'm that fuckin' stupid.. thats just an old fender i sprayed black.. sucked everbody in didn't it!!!
d.d. inneresting
d.d thanks neil..Have a good trip home!

Dr Dip,
Why do you think I edited the comment?

Originally I deleted the whole thing but then thought it was kind of clever except for the distatsteful section which I did edit.

Christ thrash, Neil HAS got a sense of humour!I don't mind you editing but just be consistent.. I certainly have read a lot of crap thats a lot more distasteful then anything I've ever written...I'm only relaying exactly what neil told me in the interview...except maybe the line about old black!
incidently you deleted the wrong version. If you could delete this version and ressurect the new version that was posted on the sydney ent cent concert refer it would be greatly appreciated.
incidently, I love your site.. Dip

I am a man who enjoys Landing on Water, so take my opinion how you will.

I think it's PURE GENIUS

From WIKIPEDIA:

A genius is an individual who successfully applies a previously unknown technique in the production of a work of art, science or calculation, or who masters and personalizes a known technique. A genius typically possesses great intelligence or remarkable abilities in a specific subject, or shows an exceptional natural capacity of intellect and/or ability, especially in the production of creative and original work, something that has never been seen or evaluated previously. Traits often associated with genius include strong individuality, imagination, uniqueness, and innovative drive

Yak - they've already killed this on youtube. Counter-productive from a marketing/advertising standpoint.

I'm 57 and go back a ways with Neil Young in terms of listening to his stuff for a long time.

For me, Neil's appeal was always the melodicism of his songs; no one, in any music genre, has written the number of great (brilliant) songs that Neil has written over the last 40 years. No one comes close.

But, after listening to "Fork in the Road", I think that it 'may be' that he is "tuned out" and won't be writing a lot of great songs from here on.

I liked the overall raw sound on the recording a lot but I thought the songs were mostly pretty weak.

At any rate, thanks for all of the great songs you're written Neil.
