It's got to be hard figuring out what to do each year for his birthday. Just when you think somebody finally got it right about Neil, as in Emmylou's case, saying his bags are always packed waiting for when the muse strikes, somebody explains his genius in another equally brilliant way.
I can't imagine what my life would have been like when I was lying in a burned out basement listening to "Tell Me Why" for the first time or crying over a break up listening to "Only Love Can Break Your Heart." How about feeling blissfully overwhelmed by the first beautiful crispy day of Spring and listening to "Round and Round."
To some of us, Neil is our hero and our inspiration. We are his Moon children fed from his creative energy. To others, the one's who have fallen really hard for his music, his defiance, and his alter ego, he is that little space in our brain we fill up with fantasy.
For everything that makes us tick, Neil is the second hand that helps us get through the worst and best of times. When our hearts are broken or when we get caught in that vacuum of life, his music is always there talking us off the ledge, luring us under a comforting full moon's gaze like a mother's lullaby. He tells us, it's gonna be alright. No matter what happens.
He's not God or an Idol. He's a messanger. And here's a message back to him from all of us. Happy Birthday to the nicest guy in the world and everybody's best friend.

The first thing every morning, my 12 year old autistic daughter puts in a Neil cd and starts the day dancing to Neil's music. This gets our day off to a GREAT start!

Neil, your birthday is making me feel old. I remember hanging out with my buddies in November 1985 when I was 17, and smoking a fatty in celebration of your 40th birthday. Now, here I am, pushing 40 myself, and still loving every sound you ever made.
You're an inspiration to all of your fellow musicians, self included, who worry that they'll get too old to rock. Forgive the weak pun, but you make us feel young, Mr. Young. You still rock as hard as ever, and unlike so many of your contemporaries, you still know what rock and roll means. Thank you for so many years of inspiration. You're the best, man. Just the best. A: Someone with absolutely no sense of spontaneity, whimsy, creativity and ability to express their feelings. You know when you see him, he's down at the end of the car; watching you move until he knows, he knows who you are.
