Archives To Be Available On CD, DVD

After all the sturm and drang over the news that the Archives would only be available on Blu-Ray, now comes word that the Archives will be available on both CD and DVD.
From Billboard:
"Blu-ray is the future," Young tells Billboard. "It sounds the best, the navigating system is the best. I've made a lot of CDs and we've made a lot of DVDs, and Blu-ray technology is so far superior to anything else. The fact there aren't many players out there now doesn't meant that much to me, because it is the future, so I would rather focus on what's next. If you were to get a Blu-ray of the 'Archive,' you would get the best."

Neil also says he'll "be touring pretty extensively for the next year, year-and-a-half. That's what I'm focusing on. Playing for people with a great band is very rewarding. It's very good for me -- it keeps me in top form physically, and that makes me feel good."

Thanks Tim, Thomas, Thos, & Bill!

Here in Sweden you can preorder the Archives.
The Price?
BluRay version: 496 USD
CD version: 363 USD

I knew it was going to be expensive, but not THAT expensive...

It's good to see that Neil is getting the message that the state of the economy is hurting many in his devoted fanbase.

As the American middle class shrinks, Blu-Ray is a wish list item, not a necessity.

Perhaps Santa will be generous, though--I can always hope!

What about 200 gram vinyl? The Fillmore and Chrome Dreams records are the best sounding pieces of music-and far superior, in every way, even to the 96/24 dvd/blue ray sound. The bass-pipe organ notes on The Way, for example, sound farty on digital, but spring to life on analogue.

Sound matters. Vinyl is as cheap as CD. So it will be like 20 records? I'm fine with that.

I'd pay top dollar for a 20 LP version of Archives vol. 1.

Seriously, I would.

I do agree 1000 % with the post from Moving Magnet and I cannot imagine NY doesn't agree with us either.
So I am not so worried about a 20 LP release of the Archives. It's just a matter of time...

Moving Magnet: "The Fillmore and Chrome Dreams records are the best sounding pieces of music-and far superior, in every way, even to the 96/24 dvd/blue ray sound." Because Sound Matters

On Charlie Rose, Neil was more energetic, focused and animated than I've ever seen him. He's talking about staying on the rooad for another year, year and a half. He's already been on the road since October '07 and as far as I can tell, and hear, each of those shows have been specatcular 2+ hour affairs.

At 62, I hope I have half as much drive and commitment to life as Neil Young does.

And why not re-release TFA - ONLY ON VINYL.

Seriously though, Neil is excited about the navigation qualities of Blue Ray. How about - a fat book for the vintl boxset which you can navigate in this new way - by turning pages!

A lot of artists are putting out their new records with a code for a free download, so you can have your IPOD mix and a record.

Neil - release the archives on vinyl (I bet he will since Fillmore and Massey Hall are available in that format)...

Also - for reason of long tunes, the Chrome Dreams II record has a completely different track order which I think is an improvement over the CD version. You have Boxcar, Bluebird, Spirit Road and Dirty Old man on side 1 (in that order)..Ordinary People side 2, the "spiritual tracks" in the same order, but with The Way sandwiched in between Ever After and The Believer side 3 and No Hidden Path (in a far better mix emphasizing rhythm guitar far more fluidly - Ben Keith is different from Poncho, far more Whittenesque)...A better album in that each side has a personality, and in order, are a more coherent whole.

I would like to see TFA "re-released" with other versions of some of the songs - or perhaps other songs from the same tour (if they are available - and I expect someone to point me in the direction of irrefutable evidence that the original tapes don't exist). If possible, this would help Neil get around his refusal to release the orginal TFA - he'd be releasing another version of the same historical period. I never did like the "Last Dance" version on TFA...

and, yes, 200 gram vinyl all the way !

Here's a good retro-alternate line-up from the TFA tour that would be pretty sweet...

Time Fades Away; Lookout Joe; New Mama; Don't Be Denied; Sweet Joni; The Last Trip To Tulsa; The Bridge; L.A.; Soldier; Come Along And Say You Will; Journey Through The Past..

sounds pricey, but that's what pirate bay is for, right?

496 USD!!! That really is expensive. I guess the price would be similar over in Australia? Anyway, even though it's expensive I'm hoping to get the blu-ray version, but I guess it will have to be a joint birthday and Christmas present. The blu-ray looks a lot better I think. The only issue I have with it is that I wont be able to make my own Archives compilation from it. And I can't back up the music onto any CDs. I'm pretty careful, but if I damage a disc in an accident then I'm screwed. But maybe the blu-ray version will come with Mp3s or something, so you can back up and make portable the music from the Archives.

Seeing and hearing Neil LIVE is something very rewarding...it's very good for us and makes us feel good... Neil Young say that or something like that.

PLEASE come back to the states with this tour and forget about the setlist and LET US DANCE!!!

I think the news report from Billboard about the Archives availability on CD and DVD has been misinterpreted. There is nothing in the quote that has been referenced that says they WILL be made available in that format - rather the quote implies that a lot of other music has been made available on CD and DVD...

What band Neil....give the people what they want; It's Crazy Horse, Neil, that is the great band we want. And yes, Moving Magnet, I wrote a while ago about getting a BOOK---make kids sit and read---us old folks too---that is so old, its new....can't imagine Christmas morning any better than a nice big book to curl up with after everyone has passed out from lack of sleep, and I enjoy a cup of tea in my quiet place....

I agree... I would like a book, too. With expensive eco paper and ink. Fine with me. Although, I suppose those who have Blu-Ray drives on their laptops would have an easier time reading the manuscripts and such than I would with my very old TV.

Then again... if the price is anywhere near what's been reported, I won't have the option of buying it anyway, so that takes care of that!

This fall, the "Archive" series will begin to roll out with a 10-disc set of performances from 1963-72. Contrary to previous reports, and Young's own comments in the media, the set will be available in standard CD and DVD configurations and not exclusively in Blu-ray, but Young says he hopes fans will take advantage of the state-of-the-art format.

I'll believe that the Archives are coming out on CD when I hear it from Neil's lips. This Billboard article might just be pissin' in the wind. Where is the original interview, the quote?

Think about it for a minute. Neil is all about high resolution audio and lookin' to the future of high end downloads. The dreaded CD just might be in his rear view mirror forever.

In reference to the comment about laptops coming out with Blu-ray players-

Fact: It doesn't matter if your computer has a Blu-ray player. You won't be able to enjoy 24/192 or 24/96 audio in any current off the shelf Mac or PC. They don't support audio above 24/48K and they down-convert anything played above the sample rate of 48k.

That's right. You need to add an aftermarket soundcard or firewire/USB interface to hear high resolution audio on your computer. Personally I have both of these, but then again, I'm an audiophile and musician.

Watch the Brainstorm video that Thrasher posted and pay attention to the message.
While the consumer keeps getting offered higher resolution and larger TV monitors, they are being force fed lower resolution audio and poor quality hardware for playback....all for the sake of convenience and increased storage.
Who cares if you can fit 10 hours of music on your iPod if it sounds like crap?

WBKM.org got it exactly right. What great band, Neil? When you truly are playing with a great band
again, I'll be there, repeatedly. But until then, I won't be wasting my money.
Sound matters. Stop pissin around these last several years and give us the real quality band. Some of us are losing faith. And interest. It's feeling slightly hollow, even with the good causes. Come on, Neil. Get back on it.
Now before I get flamed, yeah, Neil has given some quality performances in recent years, despite his stage mates, but we know what he's capable of with the right players. Transcendence versus enjoyment. (Never mind No Hidden Path. I know THAT transcends, including transcending that mediocre band.) A night of ecstasy versus flashes of it.
You know what I mean. It comes down to the other players. This group isn't the one.

Hey Crazy Horse are great - we all know that however, this band I think are better.

Its been commented on a few times on the difference in drumming in the summer from the Spring - I'm a big fan of Ralph but Chad has added that bit more to some of the songs.

In an any event I can see him playing with CH next year which would make a nice change.

The thing about non CH bands is that he can play so much more. Seeing CH at Pheonix Festival in UK in 96 and 2 shows in 2001 was fantastic but boy did those endings go on in 96. Also the setlist was limited to an extent.

If we had CH these last two tours in Europe would we have got Words, Winterlong, great band versions of Unknown Legend and Old Man etc

Anyway, just wanted to defend the 'current' band, I mean Ben Keith is a legend!

Really hope Neil tours Europe again next year but if not I might make an American date or two - if its CH playing with him fantastic but if not it should still be great.

Des.

$300 dollars is more of a reasonable price for the Archives on blu-ray. $496 is a lot of money, even for a big fan like me.
